Dear St. Anthony Families,
WELCOME TO FRIENDZY///
Here at Friendzy we are all about relationships. Teaching friendship skills helps students manage their emotions, improve their ability to set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. And, God’s design for relationships is highest and best!
Your student will engage in Friendzy for the remainder of the school year; you as parents are vital in the process as we teach your student. Each month you will see a new catchphrase, key verses and goal as we begin a new unit. We will share resources to use at home to maximize the learning experience of your student. We are so excited that you are with us on the Friendzy journey!
STARTING STRONG ///
We’re kicking off this month with our catchphrase - ‘OHANA—STICK TOGETHER. Every Friendzy catchphrase is rooted in scripture and designed to be easy to remember and repeat. As a class (and as families) we can accomplish more together as a community than any of us could alone. Community is beneficial to our physical and mental health. It is key to flourishing individually and collectively. This month’s Catchphrase, Key Verses and Goal are listed below.
CATCHPHRASE: ‘Ohana—Stick Together
Key Verses (Biblical anchor points):
Hebrews 13:1
“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters.”
GOAL: To practice collaboration and empathy in relationships while caring for each other as a community.
HELP YOUR CHILD DO THIS ///
Over the next few weeks, the goal is for students to begin using the unit’s Catchphrase: ‘Ohana—Stick Together in their everyday life. You can help them accomplish this by beginning to use this in your conversations at home. Any time you find you or your family members living out the catchphrase--use it!
CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION///
‘Ohana means family. ‘Ohana is not only who we are, but who others are to us, and who we want to grow to be. Because we are family, we have each other's back and we stick together. Consider discussing these questions together:
- Describe what family means to you.
- Have you ever heard someone say, “Let’s stick together?” What does that mean?
- How does it make you feel knowing that others are looking out for you?
FRIENDZY IN ACTION ///
In this unit, students will explore both self-awareness and social awareness. Self-awareness involves looking inward to learn about and understand yourself; social awareness is looking outward to learn about and appreciate others. This unit explores these two key components of social-emotional learning through the concept of ‘OHANA. We use the acrostic to remember that members of our ohana are Openhearted, Helpful, Available, Neighborly, and Accepting. ‘OHANA gives students the opportunity to learn about another culture and their customs to help them appreciate diversity and give them an opportunity to engage with and understand another culture.
