Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,
Our hearts are heavy with the devastating news from Maui. The people there suffer with so much loss, trauma, fear, an uncertainty. God calls us to be present with them, to hold them in our prayers.
Our sister church, the Church of the Holy Innocents, was located on Front Street in Lāhainā where the fires destroyed so much. But the fires did not destroy faith. I received an email from the Rev. Bruce DeGooyer, whose words express the transformational hope that comes to us from our beloved Christ. He says, "It is all very overwhelming right now, but God is good and I know that new life will rise from these ashes. St. Augustine’s is an ohana near to my heart, and I very much appreciate the pule. Please share my aloha with the people there."
Please know that your prayers are a tangible salve for the people in Maui. Many have asked what we can do; our prayers carry strength, calm, and healing grace of Christ. We have also heard from our Bishop, who shared this message:
"The Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi is coordinating immediate Diocesan relief efforts to the Lāhainā Fire disaster through the Diocese’s A Cup of Cold Water (ACCW) (a separately incorporated subsidiary of the Diocese that serves the houseless on Maui).
Make an online donation through the Bishop’s Pastoral Fund on the website of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi (the funds will be gathered and sent to ACCW). (Please note that you will need to create an account through Tithely.)

This is to help with immediate needs. The recovery efforts will take a very long time." — Bishop Bob
This coming Sunday, St. Augustine's will take a special collection for this fund to go directly for assisting people affected by the fires on Maui.
A prayer for those facing wildfires
O God, our refuge and strength,
our help in times of trouble.
Have mercy on the lands
damaged by fires.
Have mercy on the lands
where the weather has destroyed livelihoods.
Protect those who evacuate houses,
and strengthen those who rebuild hope
so that entire communities
may face the future without fear.
Amen.
Blessings,
Vicar Jennifer
P.S., Our community partner, Kohala Cares, will donate next week's grocery funds to assist people in Maui. Mahalo nui to Peter Pomeranze for doing this! Please note that there will be no grocery distribution on August 15.
