Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,
This week's lesson from the Gospel of Mark is like a Reader's Digest version of Jesus' life. It brings us back to the beginning of Jesus' ministry: his baptism in the Jordan River. It fast-forwards to his 40 days in the wilderness, and concludes with a call to return to God.
By moving backward in time through scripture, we recall the wisdom in the stories and reflect on ways that wisdom informs our own lives. Stories allow us to engage in deep inner reflection. And so we begin our Lenten journey!
Reviewing the story of John the Baptist anointing Jesus with water, we review our own baptisms. In our Godly Play lessons, we teach keiki about the powerful meaning of baptism—a holy rite that welcomes us back to God our Creator. Through baptism, we remember that we are made in God's image, and we celebrate the Light of Christ that lives in us.
Our relationship with God is a solid foundation that provides comfort and connection. As we travel through the "wilderness" of daily living, our relationship with God allows us to flow with the normal ups and downs of life such as joy, sorrow, love, pain, happiness, fear, calm, uncertainty, or gratitude.
Please join us for this first Sunday in Lent. As we travel with Jesus, we will recall our baptisms; we'll examine our times in the wilderness; and we will look at ways we can to return to our Creator, with whom we can rediscover the Way of Love.
Blessings,
Vicar Jennifer

VOLUNTEER TO HELP ON CAMPUS
Mahalo to folks who have volunteered to take the lead on some campus projects! If you can help out with any of these efforts, please contact the people listed below:
- Clean the walls in Walker Hall - Kathy Webb & Vicar Jennifer
- Organize the kitchen in Walker Hall - Ginger Gohier
- Remove weeds and invasive plants from the cemetery - Ginger Gohier & John Sakai
- Weed and prune terraced gardens (Biblical healing plants) - Kim Lambrecht
- Wash windows and screens in Thrift Shop and Walker Hall - George Webb
- Polish brass and silver in the church - Maurine Gomes
St. Augustine's still needs volunteers for these projects we'd like to complete before Easter:
-
Power wash and repaint parking lines and steps on campus
We won't be scheduling a work day. Instead, folks can come when it's convenient for them. We'll miss the fellowship time of working together, but we've found it is much easier for people to help out on their own schedules. Working together can still happen! Consider making it a fun gathering by working in pairs. Scheduling is still easy and you get the bonus of having a work buddy!
If you would like to help, contact Kathy Webb at admin@staugustineskohala.com and let her know which project you plan to work on. We'll make sure you have the supplies you need when you arrive. Mahalo for helping with these efforts to make our campus look amazing!

LENT 2024: 40 DAYS OF GRATITUDE AND PRESENCE
A Lenten practice from United Thank Offering
The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through UTO, individuals are invited to embrace and deepen a personal daily spiritual discipline of gratitude. UTO encourages people to notice the good things that happen each day, give thanks to God for those blessings and make an offering for each blessing using a UTO Blue Box. UTO is entrusted to receive the offerings, and to distribute the 100% of what is collected to support innovative mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and Provinces of the Anglican Communion.
This year UTO's theme for Lenten materials is “40 Days of Grateful Presence” and a call to giving thanks for the many things in our lives we take for granted - including the beauty of the 'āina and community around us. Our hope is that during the 40 days of Lent we can all use gratitude to help us be more present in our daily lives. UTO offers the following materials for individuals and congregations:
- Daily text message prompt to notice and give thanks for something in your life that you might take for granted.
- Printable calendar with the same prompts as the daily text message that you can print out and hang on your fridge to mark the days until Easter.
- Lenten materials for families – this year we have a special 40 days coloring sheet from Kristen Wheeler to help kids mark off each day until Easter and a weekly prayer (similar to what many of us use during Advent) that individuals or families can say along their Lenten journey.
- Zoom book group – this Lent we’ll be reading “Thanks a Thousand” by A.J. Jacobs; it’s the story of what happened when he tried to thank everyone who contributed to his daily cup of coffee.
You can sign up for text messages and book club or download any of our Lenten resources at unitedthankoffering.com/lent.
