MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

Jesus continues his conversation with the temple officials this week, telling them yet another parable: a vineyard owner has contracted with tenants to tend the land and harvest the crop. He sends his staff to collect the harvest from the tenants, but the tenants beat and kill them. So the owner sends others, who are also beat and killed. Finally, he sends his son, thinking the tenants would show respect.

"But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.’ So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him." Matthew 21:38-39

Jesus ends the story here, turns to the temple officials, and asks, "Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.” Matthew 21:40-41

The temple officials pass harsh judgment on the tenants. Such judgments are not ours to make, Jesus teaches us, even in such shocking and horrible circumstances as those he described in this parable.

Most Sundays, we sing the words of the Queen's Prayer by Queen Lili'uokalani: "Your loving mercy is as high as heaven and your truth so perfect. I live in sorrow, imprisoned. You are my light. Your glory, my support. Behold not with malevolence the sins of man, but forgive and cleanse. And so, O God, protect us beneath your wings and let peace be our portion now and forever more. Amen." Queen Lili'uokalani

"Behold not with malevolence the sins of man, but forgive and cleanse," writes Queen Lili'uokalani. Such a heart of grace and forgiveness is the bounty—the fruit of the Holy Spirit—that God plants in every one of us. Please join us on Sunday as we talk more about nurturing and harvesting God's loving grace, even in the midst of political, personal, and spiritual challenges we might encounter in the world today.

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer

P.S., A reminder: there will be another Time & Talents drawing this Sunday October 1 during the 9:00 am service. If you have not yet done so, please submit your paper copies to admin office or fill out the online form here.

Mahalo to Ginger Gohier for the beautiful photos!

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

We gathered last Sunday in the church parking lot for our annual Blessing of the Animals service, graced by the presence of five furry friends! We shared this prayer:

We give you thanks, O God, for the beauty of earth and sky and sea; For the richness of mountains and oceans; for the songs of birds and the loveliness of flowers. We thank you for all living creatures of the earth. On this day, we are especially grateful for the blessing of the pets in our care, who bring us joy, comfort, and unconditional love. We praise you for these gifts and pray that we may safeguard them always. Grant that we may continue to grow in our grateful enjoyment of your abundant creation, to the honor and glory of your Name, now and forever. Amen.

Every dog and every human companion were blessed, and we also shared blessings for pets who were not able to attend!

Afterward, all the dogs got a biscuit. None of the humans wanted to partake of the dog treats, despite Kirk's comments. (He said, "They are delicious!" We are not sure how he knows that.)

Blessings to all,

Vicar Jennifer

Please fill out the Time & Talents online form for 2024. Paper forms are also available in Walker Hall. As you look through our list of ministry opportunities, you might be surprised at what sparks your interest!

Every St. Augustine's member who turns in a Time & Talents Form will be entered into a drawing for a $25 donation. Congratulations to John Sakai winner of the drawing on October 1! We will have two more drawings: October 8 and October 22.

If you have information to share, please let us know! This is a space to help us stay in touch in a variety of ways, such as news, offers of assistance, or garden bounty (fruits, veggies) you would like to share. Please email Vicar Jennifer or Kathy Webb: VicarJennifer@staugustineskohala.com or admin@staugustineskohala.com

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

We are lucky to live in Hawai'i with a nearly year-round growing season. Planting a garden is a great way to connect with the 'aina and provide your 'ohana with nourishing food. Tomatoes will grow quite well in a (15 gal. or bigger) container, or you can grow them upside down. Herbs also grow in relatively little space and are a great way to save money. Basil, mint, thyme, oregano, and parsley are all good bets and have a small footprint.
