MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

As we come to the end of Lent for this year, take a moment to think about where this season has taken you. How did it feel to attend to your inner Lenten journey?

Perhaps you worked through a particular struggle; maybe you sailed through the weeks with ease and grace. Whatever the nature of the journey for you, I hope the season has gifted you with time to reflect on some of the themes Jesus invites us to ponder.

Here are a few of the topics woven throughout our scripture lessons and prayers these past weeks:

In the wilderness, shed excess baggage

Walking through Lent reminds us that in many ways we are on a wilderness journey. While we may not encounter actual lions, tiger, or bears (serpents, vipers, or snakes), we all face difficulties and uncertainties. These are the things that bite, causing pain and suffering. On our walk with Jesus, we're invited to shed that which we no longer need: fears, habits, frustrations, hardened hearts

Prepare and nurture

“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” We are born with the seed of Christ planted inside. During Lent, we prepare ourselves to nurture that seed, allowing the old shell to fall away. With hearts emptied of the world and filled with God's love, we sprout and grow. We become the plant, the bounty, the bearers, and the sharers of God's goodness.

Seek wisdom

‘Imi na‘auao. Jesus teaches us to navigate from our na'au, from the center of our soul selves. From this place, we discover we are connected to God, imbued with Divine love. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent, Jesus is lifted up to remind us that we are part of the goodness of God's creation. During Lent, we seek the wisdom that reminds us that believing in Jesus means believing in our goodness by confronting our mistakes while remembering, in faith, the goodness God knit into our souls.

Live in the present moment

Lent reminds us that true faith is something we live, not something we merely hold or have. Indeed, Jesus teaches us that the only way to live faith is in the present moment. Like Peter, we may find that we are living in the past and in the future — not in the present moment. Jesus teaches Peter (and us) live in the present moment by dropping our assumptions, our attachments, and our expectations, living by faith instead. We are drawn into living our faith through God's love, which shows us through the wilderness.

Surrender to transformation

Life's wilderness can be a gentle place as well as a fierce landscape. Through it all, God's agape love accompanies us. Sometimes we experience it as gentle love; sometimes agape love is a crucible that forges us, forms us in glorious ways.

The fire of agape love is the same fire that made the ashes we shared on Ash Wednesday. In that fire, we live only in the present moment. In that fire, the pain and separation are scorched, burned away, and transformed. What remains is the essence of the Lenten season: we are invited into sacred transformation, following the Way of the Cross to be in loving unity with God and one another.

This brings us to Palm Sunday. Its story combines Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem with the Good Friday events of his persecution and death on the cross.

The Palm Sunday / Good Friday story reveals a day of contrasts: light and dark. Joy and terror. Resistance and surrender. Life and death. This is the day Jesus give his life so that Christ consciousness can be born into the world.

Christ consciousness lives in the world through us. How will we be the hands and heart of Jesus? On Easter morning, we will be invited to allow the miracle of the risen Christ to inspire and guide us. To prepare for these joys, we are invited to walk with Jesus during Holy Week. I hope you'll join me for this sacred journey.

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer

ST. AUGUSTINE'S NEWS

FINAL WEEK! VOLUNTEER TO HELP ON CAMPUS

Mahalo to folks who have volunteered to take the lead on some campus projects! If you can help out with any of these efforts, please contact the people listed below:

  • Clean the walls in Walker Hall - Kathy Webb & Vicar Jennifer
  • Organize the kitchen in Walker Hall - Ginger Gohier
  • Remove weeds and invasive plants from the cemetery - Ginger Gohier & John Sakai
  • Weed and prune terraced gardens (Biblical healing plants) - Kim Lambrecht
  • Wash windows and screens in Thrift Shop and Walker Hall - George Webb
  • Polish brass and silver in the church - Maurine Gomes
  • Power wash / repaint parking lines & steps - Dave Lambrecht

We won't be scheduling a work day. Instead, folks can come when it's convenient for them. Consider making it a fun gathering by working in pairs. Scheduling is still easy and you get the bonus of having a work buddy!

If you would like to help, contact Kathy Webb at admin@staugustineskohala.com and let her know which project you plan to work on. We'll make sure you have the supplies you need when you arrive. Mahalo for helping with these efforts to make our campus look amazing!
