Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,
May 19, 2024 marks our celebration of Pentecost, an important day in our church year. Pentecost comes from Greek word pentekoste which means fiftieth. Each year, we observe Pentecost fifty days after Easter. This Sunday, I'll tell the Godly Play story "The Mystery of Pentecost."
Pentecost is the story of the disciples receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, which they experienced as a rushing wind and the sensation of being lit from within, their tongues aflame with the power to speak different languages. Pentecost depicts the enlightenment of the disciples (followers & learners), who were transformed by the Holy Spirit into apostles (messengers & teachers).
The Pentecost story isn't just about the apostles; it includes us. Sent by Christ, the Holy Spirit flows through each of us. In every moment, we can choose to tune in to feel, think, and act through that holy presence. We are called to embody the teachings of Christ. As a friend reminded my today, this is a powerful invitation indeed. Knowing we are so invited, how will we respond?
At the end of every Godly Play story come the "wondering questions," meant to remind us that God invites us to live the Way of Love:
- I wonder how you felt God's presence this week?
- I wonder what is your favorite part of the story?
- I wonder how you discovered yourself in this story?
- I wonder how you experienced God in this story?
These are just a few examples of "wondering questions," which
help us understand our relationship to the story, with God, and with one another. Children and adults alike learn much from Godly Play stories, which help us open our hearts and minds to the essence of the stories of our faith. I hope you'll join me on Sunday as we wonder together!
In Christ,
Jennifer

GODLY PLAY UPDATE & PHASE II FUNDRAISER
We are eight months into our new Montessori-based Godly Play Sunday School curriculum, and it has been a fantastic start! Mahalo to everyone who has supported the program by sponsoring stories and sending their keiki.
Godly Play stories are designed to ignite imaginations and expand children’s understanding of our Creator. The story props are key, made with quality materials, built to be used for many decades of spiritual storytelling. We have completed the fall stories and are now raising funds to purchase the spring stories and purchase shelving to create a special storytelling area in our Sunday School classroom.
Vicar Jennifer has created a Godly Play sponsorship notebook that is available in Walker Hall. Please take a look to get a sense of the materials we need to purchase.
If you feel called to sponsor a story or part of a story, please do! You can sponsor a story by signing your name (and the amount you want to contribute) in the notebook. You can also sign up to sponsor a story using this link. Please select a story (or building materials for shelving) you would like to sponsor.
Sunday school is open to all keiki ages 3-10 and takes place during the 9:00 am service in the Sunday School room. Feel free to contact Vicar Jennifer or Youth Director Kathy Matsuda with any questions. Mahalo for your continued support or our keiki and our future generations!
