Dear St. Augustine's ‘ohana,
As I listened to the rain this morning, the cycle of the seasons came to mind. Spring renewal brings rain, blossoms, and the bounty of various plants. As we observe the seasons, we remember our connections with ‘aina and our gratitude to God for the blessings of creation.
In a similar way, the cycle of the church year reminds us to observe the seasons of our soul, which bring opportunities to nurture our connections with Creator and harvest the bounty to serve others.
This Sunday, we close the season of Easter and look forward to celebrating Pentecost. The longest season of our church year, Pentecost brings to our awareness the constant presence of the Holy Spirit—our bridge to Christ. Living in us, the Holy Spirit inspires us, breathing life into our faith and our relationship with the Divine. We are called to be conscious of this gift and how it can work in and through us to further our mission to "be the love of God and to feel the love of God."
While we ponder the mystery of Easter and the end of Christ's earthly ministry, we remember that Jesus says, "I am in you, and you are in me." With faith in this connection, we reflect on the potential for spiritual transformation this next season could bring. Pentecost carries messages of unity: we are unified with the Holy Spirit. All we have to do is be aware, open, and available to it!
Tomorrow, our Bishop's Committee will gather for some retreat time to ground our work in mission. We'll be looking at what Spirit urges us to do as a church, taking seriously our baptismal promises and the Pentecost message to unify. Please accompany us on this journey as we think about how to "BE the love of God and FEEL the love of God" at St. Augustine's:
Inward focus on unity: How are we creating, strengthening, and expanding our relationships with God and one another at St. Augustine's and in our diocese?
- How can we unify with the gifts God gives us as individuals? How do we identify and nurture these gifts for use in worship, fellowship, formation, the care and use of our campus, and in our diocese?
Outward focus on unity: How are we creating, strengthening, and expanding our relationships with the wider community through our activities to serve North Kohala?
- How can we unify with the gifts God gives us as a church? How do we identify and nurture these gifts for use in our Thrift Shop, community meals, music outreach, bazaar, and community partnerships?
In this season, we are called to live in conscious connection with God's love. This is what "Christ consciousness" means for us as humans: to be in and act through the gift of love that comes from the Divine.

SUNDAY SCHOOL - Held each Sunday at 9:00 am with Youth Director Kathy Matsuda.
FELLOWSHIP HOUR - Held Sundays after our 9:00 am service. We gather to enjoy conversation, coffee, and treats in Walker Hall. We've started including some potluck items, so please bring some savory or sweet treats to share if you like! Mahalo to all who have been providing delicious food and to Jeannette Hensel for bringing coffee.
TEEN GATHERINGS - We will be starting in-person gatherings for teens soon! Please stay tuned for further details.
BIBLE STUDY - All are invited to join us for Bible study Fridays at 2:00 pm in Walker Hall. Each week we'll be discussing the lectionary for the coming Sunday, with emphasis on the Gospel reading.

On the menu this month: Curried Beef and Lentil Stew with Rice.
Our intent is to welcome all: friends, neighbors, strangers, and our church 'ohana to eat and talk story. We extend our hospitality and our love not just by offering a meal, but also by gathering with people in fellowship.

HOW WE PICK THE HYMNS
For those who missed it last week...The following information is from Kirk, who does so much for us to select and prepare the music for our weekly services. Mahalo, Kirk, for all that you do!

From time to time, folks have asked us, "How do we pick the hymns for each service?" Like many things in life, it's complicated...
In many cases, the choice of hymns is pretty easy. Silent Night on Christmas Eve, Go Tell It on the Mountain Christmas Morning, Christ the Lord is Risen Today for Easter morning. In general, the choice of hymns follows from the lectionary readings for each service. It's important to reinforce the messages from our scriptures readings in the music we sing!
We are careful to use music for which we have the right to use. St. Augustine's has a subscription to a service called RiteSong, which provides the rights for music approved for use in the Episcopal Church. In addition to these sources, we sometimes draw from other online sites such as Hymnary and The Cyber Hymnal. We also use many hymn settings Mila composed for us—a wonderful and lasting gift he gave us!
Besides reinforcing the assigned scripture readings, there are a few additional things we keep in mind when choosing hymns:
- Not repeating the same hymn too often, generally no more than once per (liturgical) year.
- Having a variety of styles among the hymns.
- Having a combination of familiar and lesser-known hymns.
Sometimes people request a specific hymn, and that's great! As long as we're able to get the rights to use it, let us know, and we can find a good match for the lectionary of an upcoming service.

The Thrift Shop is open Wednesdays from noon - 6:00 pm and also on the first Saturday of the month from 8:00 am - 11:00 am.
VOLUNTEERS

St. Augustine's is grateful to the community for the many items generously donated to our Thrift Shop! We accept donations when the Thrift Store is staffed by our volunteers.

UPDATE ON MASKS
St. Augustine's Covid team recommends the following change in our mask protocol:
- Masks are voluntary inside campus buildings unless you have been exposed to COVID, flu, cold, or other communicable illness.
- Masks are encouraged for those who are immuo-compromised.
- As always, please care for yourself and others by staying home if you are ill. Contact your doctor if you feel sick and get tested if you have COVID symptoms.
- If COVID infections rise, we may need to revisit our masking protocols.
