MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

If you noticed Jesus' frustrated with Peter last week, welcome to Part 2 of the story! This week, just before Passover, Jesus displays a full-on outburst of anger as he confronts vendors at the temple. He drives the animals out of the temple, dumps the coins from the money changers, and overturns their tables. "He told those who were selling the doves, 'Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!'" — John 2:17

Why is Jesus angry? Jesus was not shocked by the presence of vendors in the temple. He would have seen them there many times. Jesus was angry about the oppression of the poor.

Passover was a particularly busy time for vendors to sell animals to travelers. Many of the travelers were poor; they had traveled far. The vendors took advantage, charging exorbitant prices for those who could least afford it. For Jesus, this was evidence of a larger, shadowy commercial system tainted by greed and power.

And so Jesus was angry. Fully human, Jesus exhibited what many would call righteous anger—a type of heart-centered anger that motivates us to stand up for what's good, right, just, and loving.

Anger, like any emotion, is part of being human and is not inherently bad. It is true that anger can cause hurt, both for ourselves and others. The shadow side of anger comes from acting impulsively, without care or awareness. But anger can also be a helpful clue that something is not right. Paying attention to anger when it arises can make us more self aware of our fears and vulnerabilities. With such awareness, we are less likely to lash out with impulsive anger and more likely to lead with our hearts instead.

Jesus' actions at the temple are part of a larger story of his journey to the cross. For us today, the story can prompt us to think about our own emotions. How do we act in the face of injustice? Do we stand up for the rights of others? Do we oppress others? Are we contributing to systems that hurt those who struggle?

Please join us on Sunday as we continue our Lenten journey to reflect on this story and the questions it raises.

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer

ST. AUGUSTINE'S NEWS

PICTURED ABOVE Jeanne Cooper, a second-year student in our diocese's Waiolahui'ia Center for Ministry program.

As part of her fieldwork at St. Augustine's, Jeanne will be serving at both the 7:00 am and 9:00 am worship services each Sunday for the coming year.

She also plans to volunteer at our Thrift Shop, assist with events, and will discern additional aspects of her fieldwork as the year progresses.

WELCOME JEANNE COOPER!

St. Augustine's to host a deacon-in-training for her year of fieldwork.

Jeanne Cooper joins us this Sunday for a year of fieldwork as a second-year diaconal student in our diocese's Waiolahui'ia Center for Ministry program.

Jeanne (pronounced "Jeannie") has worshipped at St. James' in Waimea since March 2019, after moving to Moku O Keawe from the Bay Area, where she was an editor at the San Francisco Chronicle and studied hula with Keolaulani Hālau 'Ōlapa O Laka.

Active in community service, hospitality and worship ministries at Episcopal churches for 20 years, Jeanne looks forward to learning from, and growing with, the people of St. Augustine's and North Kohala.

We are excited to participate in Jeanne's formation process, knowing that we will learn from her, as well. Please give Jeanne a warm welcome this Sunday as she begins her fieldwork with us!

LITTLE FREE PANTRY FOOD DONATIONS - MARCH 10TH

For the last 6 years, St. Augustine's has been a major supporter for the Little Free Pantry in Kapa'au. During that time, we have spent over $5,000 to stock the pantry. The pantry stayed open during COVID thanks to constant sanitizing and stocking by a few volunteers.

The Little Free Pantry allows those in need to access food any time of day or night with no questions asked or credentials required. Jesus reminds us to, “feed my sheep." He did not say which ones or how much. He said, “feed my sheep!” This is what the pantry does!

The church would like to provide a greater variety of quality, non-perishable foods. We are asking for kokua from our St. Augustine's 'ohana and the community. Starting March 10, the second Sunday of each month will be designated for “Little Free Pantry” donations. Donations can be in the form of food or money.

Please bring your food donations to church on Sunday March 10. Items will be brought into the church by our volunteer team and blessed during the 9:00 am service.

Monetary donations are welcome March 10 or at any weekly service at St. Augustine's. On the offering envelope or check, please note "Little Free Pantry" as the designated recipient. You may also pledge online here.

For food items, we are looking for high quality proteins and snacks. Deacon Lani has compiled a list of items on Amazon to give you an idea of the pantry's greatest needs:

VOLUNTEER TO HELP ON CAMPUS

Mahalo to folks who have volunteered to take the lead on some campus projects! If you can help out with any of these efforts, please contact the people listed below:

  • Clean the walls in Walker Hall - Kathy Webb & Vicar Jennifer
  • Organize the kitchen in Walker Hall - Ginger Gohier
  • Remove weeds and invasive plants from the cemetery - Ginger Gohier & John Sakai
  • Weed and prune terraced gardens (Biblical healing plants) - Kim Lambrecht
  • Wash windows and screens in Thrift Shop and Walker Hall - George Webb
  • Polish brass and silver in the church - Maurine Gomes

St. Augustine's still needs volunteers for these projects we'd like to complete before Easter:

  • Power wash and repaint parking lines and steps on campus

We won't be scheduling a work day. Instead, folks can come when it's convenient for them. We'll miss the fellowship time of working together, but we've found it is much easier for people to help out on their own schedules. Working together can still happen! Consider making it a fun gathering by working in pairs. Scheduling is still easy and you get the bonus of having a work buddy!

If you would like to help, contact Kathy Webb at admin@staugustineskohala.com and let her know which project you plan to work on. We'll make sure you have the supplies you need when you arrive. Mahalo for helping with these efforts to make our campus look amazing!
