MAHALO NUI LOA, BRENDAN!
Brendan McDougall, who has served St. Augustine's for the last five years as its Buildings & Grounds Committee Chair, recently announced that he will step away from that role at the end of this month.
At last Sunday's Bishop's Committee meeting, Vicar Jennifer offered the following courtesy resolution, which was wholeheartedly adopted by all members of the Bishop's Committee for inclusion in meeting minutes and the 2023 annual report:
BE IT RESOLVED that members of the St. Augustine's Bishop's Committee, on behalf of members of the St. Augustine's Episcopal Church and wider community of friends in North Kohala, offer their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Brendan McDougall for his five years of service, leadership, and hard work as the chair of St. Augustine's Buildings & Grounds Committee; we appreciate his efforts on the many facets of upkeep of our campus buildings and grounds; and be it further
RESOLVED that we greatly appreciate Brendan's work on livestreaming at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic; his swift action and technical knowledge enabled us to pivot to livestreamed worship services quickly—a service that continues to benefit members who are unable to attend in person; behind the scenes, Brendan upgraded our internet connectivity, consulted on equipment purchases, ran the livestream on Sundays, and provided livestream training for Mark Sahagun, which enabled Mark to earn funds doing similar work in the community; and be it further
RESOLVED that we are grateful for Brendan's work to make St. Augustine's a place of respite that welcomes all people: church members, travelers, and community members who are fed spiritually and find peace in our historic sanctuary; in particular, Brendan's preparations for candidate interviews included deep cleaning Walker Hall, the vicar's office, and painting and repairs in the vicarage; his lighting of the church for our Christmas Eve services made our celebrations even more special; Brendan organized many campus work days and provided his own sweat equity on countless projects; he oversaw the preparations for tenting and termite fumigation for the vicarage, Walker Hall, and Thrift Shop; his forward thinking prompted him to suggest hiring an inspector to take a close look at all our buildings to generate a list of issues that need to be addressed; Brendan has headed a sub-group to prioritize the repairs on the inspector's list; and be it further
RESOLVED that we deeply grateful for and applaud Brendan's work to address pressing safety concerns, including the removal of a large mango tree that overhung the vicarage, orchestrating the complex and difficult removal of the Royal Poinciana tree, and removing the lytch gate, which was deemed a safety hazard and could not be repaired; he also installed three security cameras (donated by Peter and Susan Denman), which have provided members and the vicar's family with peace of mind and important data.

SUNDAY SCHOOL - Held each Sunday at 9:00 am with Youth Director Kathy Matsuda. This week's story is The Circle of the Holy Eucharist.
FELLOWSHIP HOUR - Held Sundays after our 9:00 am service. We gather to enjoy conversation, coffee, and treats in Walker Hall. We've started including some potluck items, so please bring some savory or sweet treats to share if you like! Mahalo to all who have been providing delicious food and to Jeannette Hensel for bringing coffee.
TEEN GATHERINGS - Stay tuned for the next event coming soon!
BIBLE STUDY - Bible study meets Fridays at 2:00 pm in Walker Hall. Join us for Bible Study on Friday September 1st at 2:00 pm in James Walker Hall. We’ll discuss the following readings: Jeremiah 15:15-21,
Psalm 26:1-8, Romans 12:9-21, Matthew 16:21-28
CHOIR - Join us Tuesdays at 5:00 pm to sing through the hymns for the following Sunday. All are welcome!

August 26, 9:30 am - 2:00 pm - Making a kahili for St. Augustine's with master feather workers in Walker Hall.

August 26, 5:00 pm - Catered reception in honor of Mary Hanano will be held at Kawaihae (following the 5:00 pm beach mass).

August 27 - Burial Rite for Mary Hanano held at St. Augustine's immediately following the 9:00 am service. Light lunch afterward.

August 27, 5:30 pm - St. Augustine's will host a mini-concert (Kirk, Vicar Jennifer, Wendy Hindley, and Suzanne Melgart) with potluck to follow in Walker Hall. (See poster below for details.)

August 28, 4:30 pm - Community Meal with Live Music. Shoyu Chicken and Rice with Roasted Vegetables. Live music by Kayden Valenzuela. Dine in or take out options.

THE JOY OF SINGING!
If you sing in church, you're invited to join us every Tuesday at 5:00 pm! We go over the hymns for the following two weeks. No experience is necessary; just bring your voice, your love of music, and a willing heart to sing. Please join us even if you don't want to join the choir but just like to sing our hymns. Mahalo to Kirk for leading us and helping us make joyful sounds! All are welcome!

The Thrift Shop is open Wednesdays from noon - 6:00 pm and also on the first Saturday of the month from 8:00 am - 11:00 am.
