SUPPORTING OUR YOUTH
For 15 years, St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church has supported our youth with scholarships, assisting 33 students with funds to continue their academic or vocational education following high school.
This year, four of our youth are eligible to receive scholarships: two continuing college students and two scholars who are about to graduate from high school.
To help us continue our tradition of supporting our youth, please consider giving to the St. Augustine’s College Fund. Whether you are a local Kohala resident or a friend of St. Augustine’s from elsewhere in the US, your help will allow our students to thrive.
Your gift enables our scholars to:
-
Minimize student debt. Costs for college and vocational education continue to rise, and student loans carry a high interest rate. Young professionals with scholarships pay off those loans more quickly and are able to start saving for the future.
-
Spend more time studying. Students who work during the school year have to juggle study time or turn down opportunities for extra activities in their academic field. Scholarships can reduce that burden, allowing students to work fewer hours and focus more on their studies.
-
Purchase necessary tools and equipment. The proper tools can make all the difference. Scholarships enable students to afford laptops and extra study materials or to invest in quality tools for their trade that will last a lifetime.
Our youth are the future! Please consider investing in their success by giving to the St. Augustine’s College Fund.

COMMUNITY MEAL UPDATE
St. Augustine's volunteers provided over 325 hot meals of homemade chicken parmesan pasta & broccoli to North Kohala residents last Monday. Mahalo nui to all the volunteers and to Chef Melissa Kaiawe for partnering with us to help feed our community!
This was the first meal post-pandemic where we offered sit-down dining in Walker Hall in addition to take out meals. It was wonderful to gather in community to share delicious food and talk story.
Community Meals are planned for the fourth Monday of every month, with the next meal on Monday May 22 at 4:30.

OUR CHURCH IS NOW A GUN FREE ZONE
As discussed and voted upon by our Bishop's Committee, St. Augustine's is included in our diocese's new resolution making our church campus (and all church campuses in our diocese) a gun-free zone.
Please read the resolution and explanation here.
The diocese has provided signs to post in our buildings, and we'll be including a note about this resolution in our Sunday worship materials and on our website.
What this means for us
Posting gun free zone signs is a statement of solidarity with our diocese and sister churches across all islands recognizing that church property must provide safe spaces of peace. The resolution reinforces our ability as a faith organization to articulate our desire for safety and peace on our campus in keeping with the policy of The Episcopal Church. (For details, please read the explanation posted here.)
We are not expected to search or confront members or guests who enter our campus. The "gun free zone" signs are a statement of our belief in the sanctity of human life and our opposition to gun violence.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact Vicar Jennifer at vicarjennifer@staugustineskohala.com or stop by to talk.

GODLY PLAY TRAINING — NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CURRICULUM
Last weekend, Youth Ministry Director Kathy Matsuda and volunteer Sunday School teachers Lucas Masada Corey, Kathy Webb, and Michelle White attended Godly Play training at St. James' Church in Waimea.
The result of a lifetime of research and practice by theologian, author and educator, Rev. Dr. Jerome Berryman, the Godly Play® method is a curriculum of spiritual practice exploring the mystery of God’s presence in our lives.
The Godly Play curriculum engages what is most exciting about religious education: God inviting us into scripture and spiritual experience. Godly Play practice teaches us to listen for God and to make authentic and creative responses to God’s call in our lives.
- Godly Play is a creative, imaginative approach to Christian formation and spiritual guidance.
- Godly Play has a Montessori foundation with 40+ years of research and practice.
- Godly Play values process, openness, discovery, community, and relationships.
- Godly Play models the worship life, stories, symbols, and rituals of Christian congregations.
- Godly Play nurtures participants to larger dimensions of belief and faith through wondering and play.
This 18 hour Core Training was a refreshing and reinvigorating weekend for our Sunday School team. In addition to the teaching team, Vicar Jennifer is an experienced Godly Play teacher and established the program at her previous church. This is an exciting development for the youth program at St. Augustine's. Stay tuned for more sharing!

UPDATE ON MASKS
St. Augustine's Covid team recommends the following change in our mask protocol:
- Masks are voluntary inside campus buildings unless you have been exposed to COVID, flu, cold, or other communicable illness.
- Masks are encouraged for those who are immuo-compromised.
- As always, please care for yourself and others by staying home if you are ill. Contact your doctor if you feel sick and get tested if you have COVID symptoms.
- If COVID infections rise, we may need to revisit our masking protocols.
Mahalo for your patience as we continue to respond to changes. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and healthy!
