Food Pantry News

“Someone needs to help…”

You hear or see it all the time. An older couple’s house has a fire that causes significant damage, and there’s a report on TV – “Someone needs to help this couple.”

Three college roommates on their way home are in a bad traffic accident and their story is shared on social media – “Someone needs to help these young people.”

You hear people talking at the local coffee shop about a father who is sick and unable to work, how his unemployment benefits aren’t enough to cover his family’s needs – “Someone needs to help this family.”

St. Barnabas’ Food Pantry is an ongoing church ministry attempting to be that “someone” trying to help individuals and families in this community suffering food shortages caused by a variety of reasons.

But the pantry can’t help if a good number of "someone"s don’t regularly donate food and other items from its needs list, so those items can be distributed in the Food Pantry.

The pantry needs support from all church families, weekly or as often as you can.

If each family brings each week 1-2 items, or 3-5, or even better 6 or 7 or 8 or 10, then volunteers will have supplies to offer on the pantry’s shelves, and those who are using the pantry to offset food shortages will be able to continue to depend on the pantry. You are urged to add a few items for the pantry to your weekly shopping list. Donations of items are preferred, but if that doesn’t work for you, please consider putting a check payable to “the pantry” in the collection this Sunday.

Find a list of items needed for the food pantry here.

Candlemas

We will be celebrating Candlemas during Noon Eucharist on Wednesday, February 1st at 12pm. Candlemas is a celebration of The Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ. During this time, all of the candles of our church will be blessed along with any candles you would like to bring from home for blessing! Throughout the remainder of the year, these candles serve as a symbol of the light that Jesus Christ brought with him to the world at birth.

Summer 2023 Mission Trip

The time has finally come for us to resume summer mission trips, and WE CAN'T WAIT! EYC at St. B has a unique opportunity this summer to attend a mission experience organized by Youth Mission Co., an organization with which St. Barnabas has partnered in the past for successful experiences in Memphis, TN and Asheville, NC. This summer we will head to Dallas, TX from June 18-23 for our mission experience! Located in downtown Dallas, DYM gives young people an opportunity to understand the situations of those who are living on the margins in a large urban center. Groups will discuss themes of food insecurity, poverty, homelessness, and the changing dynamics of gentrification in this major city in the heart of Texas.

Please complete the interest form linked below to reserve a spot for your child(ren) for our trip! This is not a firm commitment, this is just letting us know who is interested in coming. Both middle and high school will be traveling together, however the groups will be separated during travel and for daily activities throughout the trip.

The total cost per person is $550, which includes the cost of travel (we are driving), food, and lodging. We hope that St. Barnabas is able to fund the majority of that cost through reserve funds and our spring fundraiser (info below). The sooner we have final numbers of those interested, the sooner we can make travel arrangements and figure out in what capacity St. B will be able to fund the trip and what financial responsibility families might have.

PLEASE DO NOT LET THE PRICE TAG DISCOURAGE YOU FROM FILLING OUT THE FORM! We do our best to find the means to bring EYC members on trips if they desire to come. If your kid wants to join us but you have concerns about a financial commitment, fill out the form and we will work with you!

Episcopal Youth Event

The next Episcopal Youth Event (EYE23) will be held from July 4-8, 2023 on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, MD, which sits approximately four miles from the northeast border of Washington, D.C. EYE23 participants must have turned at least 15 and be no older than 19 by July 4, 2023. Participants should be enrolled in 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade during the 2022–2023 school year. For full info about participation, view the EYE23 Application Form to the left.

Every three years, the Episcopal Church convenes an international youth event so “that the energy of the youth of the Episcopal Church can continue to be utilized in active ministry as members of the Body of Christ.” Since the first EYE in 1982, this popular event has welcomed thousands of young people from across the Episcopal Church for celebration, worship, learning, and leadership training.

Applications are due by February 10th.
