Let God Be God

by the Reverend Canon Stephanie Spellers, Canon in Residence

The last few summers, I’ve had the great pleasure of serving at the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Jackson, Wyoming. The modest log cabin sanctuary features a picture window over the altar with a clear view of Grand Teton Mountain in all its majesty. Who needs stained glass when nature is painting this masterpiece, right?

I understand why Jesus begged his disciples not to build a dwelling as they beheld his transfigured presence on that mountain. I imagine he wanted to make sure we don’t think we can contain the holy: with words, with structures, even with offerings. Sometimes it’s enough to stand in awe-filled, overwhelmed humility and gratitude, and let God be God.
