for a new Adult Formation Series

Credo: I Give My Heart

"Credo" is the Latin word that is often translated as "I believe", but many theologians argue that its deeper meaning is "I give my heart to". Come and join others as we explore what the deep call of our faith compels us to "give our hearts to" as God's people, the Church.

Each week we will explore the part of the Book of Common Prayer known as "An Outline of the Faith" (commonly known as the Catechism) that begins on page 845. Our plan is not to simply explore the answers to the questions as outlined in the BCP, but to explore how the questions of faith resonate with us in our own lives and grow in understanding of how our faith informs the way we live our lives and understand our world.

This week, the Rev'd Claiborne Jones will lead a conversation on the next five sections of the "Outline of the Faith" (sections: God the Son, The New Covenant, The Creeds, The Holy Spirit, and The Holy Scriptures).

Come join the conversation - all are welcome!

We will meet at 11:30(ish) am in Room M-110.

Children's Formation

for Children Age 3 - Grade 5

We have kicked off Children's Christian Formation during Worship at 10 am using the model we used last year - where children will gather with the community for worship and then move to a special formation offering during the Liturgy of the Word that is tailored just for them. They will then return to worship as we exchange the Peace and to share in Holy Communion.

We will use this model for the start of the Christian Formation year and, in the weeks ahead, we will be inviting parents, grandparents, and guardians of young children into conversations about how we can shape our Children's Christian Formation program to better serve the needs of our community.

Marie Hurley Blair and Lynnsay met each other in the halls of their dorm in college fifty years ago and have anjoyed an enduring friendship. The is the second time Marie and Lynnsay will have the gift of collaborating to offer a Quiet Day with a focus of slowing down, noticing our breath, resting with compassion in and for our bodies and resting in the Beloved.

When Marie's husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's twenty-two years ago, she continued to work as a librarian while beginning to receive training the the teaching of yoga, studying the mind-body connection and how breathing, meditation and gentle movement can ease pain and improve mood. A 500-hour registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance, she continues to deepen her training in yoga for chronic pain, cancer, and overall aging. Mindful yoga - moving slowly into postures and noticing how the body and breath respond - is available to all bodies. "If you can breathe, you can do yoga," Marie assures newcomers.

Marie will lead a guided loving-kindness meditation and lead an hour-long yoga practice that may be enjoyed seated or on a mat or towel. Chairs will be available. Please bring your own mat or towel if you have one.

All bodies are welcome.

Close of Day

Join the St. Bartholomew's Schola Cantorum as they sing the Office of Compline, the last service of the day before bedtime in monastic communities. The service is rich in imagery of peace, trust, and faith.

The liturgy is offered as the day draws to a close, sung almost entirely by the Schola (choir) and offered on behalf of those in attendance and for the world. The music ranges from ancient plainsong melodies, to newly composed choral anthems and responses.

The St. Bartholomew's Schola offers Compline every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the months during academic terms (Sept-May), usually at their home church of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal. As part of their outreach, this one is being offered at St. Bede’s.

Come experience the peace and beauty of Compline with us!

Prayer Vigil for Extra-Ordinary Times

We are holding a weekly, half-hour prayer vigil for the country on Sundays after 10 am worship, in room M108. Feel free to come by for a short time or for the entire time.

New Digital Assisted Listening System

for St. Bede's Nave

Thanks to a a generous grant, we have upgraded our Nave sound system with a new digital assisted listening server. This digital server will stream the Nave audio directly to your smartphone and, from there, it can be delivered through wired headphones, Bluetooth devices, or, if you have smart phone enabled hearing aids, the audio can be streamed directly into the hearing aids. Our hope is that this system can improve speech intelligibility for any who have a difficult time hearing or understanding the spoken word in the Nave.

The FIRST STEP to use the new system is download the "ListenWIFI" app onto your smartphone by clicking on one of the links below. The app is free and does not require any type of registration or password (thank goodness!). The app will not work until you are at St. Bede's and connected to our Wi-Fi network.

The SECOND STEP is to arrive at St. Bede's and connect to the new "St. Bede's - Guest" Wi-Fi network which is an open network that requires no password (thank goodness, again!). The system will not work if you connect to the old "stbedes" password protected network.

A discussion group, grounded in prayer, for those who have questions, concerns, and emotions that feel too big, and need a safe place to process with others.

We will see what participants need from this group. Perhaps it will just be a place to express what you are feeling, or maybe some will want to know what action can be taken.

And we will pray together.

Some questions to consider:

How are you doing, and what are you feeling?

Where are you in terms of processing changing public policy?

How can we live the values of our faith

in the face of conflicting public policy?

Social Justice Advocacy Group Forming

We are a parish who believes in social justice. It is part of our baptismal covenant to care for those who are less fortunate and those who suffer.

Some of our members have been doing some social justice advocacy work. One example is marching in protest marches or attending rallies. If you would be interested in finding out when these opportunities arise, please let me know.

St. Bede's new Art from the Heart Gallery celebrated the opening of its inaugural exhibition on Saturday, August 2 with many from the local arts community in attendance. The current exhibition features original works by artists associated with the Tucker Arts Alliance and will run through Thursday, October 2. Please enjoy the gallery when you are at St. Bede's for worship or for a class or a meeting. The gallery is open on Sundays and by appointment by calling the office (770.938.9797) during regular office hours.

On Saturday, September 13, the Rev. Iñaki Guevara, Melody Murray, Kelsey Murray, Paul Werner and I traveled to El Refugio in Lumpkin, GA. El Refugio offers hospitality to family members visiting detained loved ones at Stewart Detention Center. We took 55, $25 each, gas cards for family members, made possible by your incredible generosity! Your love of strangers, your support of these families, is so fantastic! They, and I, are so grateful for all of you! My heartfelt thanks to each of you for your very generous support of these families facing so much hardship.

We were able to visit two women in detention at Stewart and offer them our love and support. And we visited with families at El Refugio who had travelled hours for their one hour visit with their loved ones.

ESOL Volunteer Opportunities

Many of you know that our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program has been going strong since January of 2013. We started a new year on August 26th with some returning students and new ones as well.

ESOL classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and Wednesdays from 10:30 until Noon. If you have interest in learning more or participating in this amazing ministry, please talk to Orisha Parsons or Judah Sali. Invitation to Prayer Shawl Ministry



Prayer shawls are used to provide comfort, acknowledge joy or appreciation, say goodbye, or any other reason to share God’s love. They may be used in prayer, and the act of making them is prayer. Making them with friends is church.

Currently, a prayer shawl group meets one morning and one evening a month. You are invited to attend one or both meetings.

As violence escalates in Ukraine, over one million people have already fled the country — and the borders are flooded with many more people desperate to leave.

Almost all of them are women and children who have had to seek safety on their own, leaving their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons behind.

As this crisis continues to evolve, we are working with Anglican agencies and our other partners to provide humanitarian assistance, and urgently ask for your help.

Your emergency gift today will support our immediate response, providing cash, blankets, hygiene supplies and other needs as this crisis unfolds.

Our faith networks are currently on the ground in the border areas of Poland, Hungary and Romania, and we will continue to coordinate with them in order to help those who have been displaced. Specifically, our partner ACT Alliance is helping families on the Hungarian border, and our Anglican partners are mobilizing both an immediate and long-term response in Poland, Romania and Hungary.
