A Note from our Rector

Dear Parish Family,

This weekend we bless backpacks and pencils and ipads as our families return to school. It has been a busy time here at St. Christopher’s with lots of work being done on the education wing to prepare us for the arrival of our preschool families. This weekend I encourage everyone who comes to church to stop and write a sticky note of encouragement or two or four for our preschool teaching teams. We will decorate their doors with them as a welcome on Monday. Look for the sticky notes in the entranceway of the Church. Our preschool families are a wonderful expression of our mission statement – To Know Christ, To Love Christ, to Serve Christ in Others. Each day a diverse array of children are welcomed with love as they adjust to this new adventure called school. They children pray over their snack and, in monthly chapel time and weekly music class, learn that God created them in love to be people of peace and of the welcome they can find inside our place of worship.

Even today, it is not unusual for me to find a young adult visitor at our door who went to preschool here and is coming back to visit a place they remember with joy. There are remarkable pressures on families today as they navigate pandemics and all the stresses of parenting in 2022. We will do all that we can to be an oasis of calm and support for them. So, this weekend write a couple (or four or five) notes to wish a St. Christopher’s Preschool Teacher a great year supporting them as they welcome the little children and their families of our community.

Peace,

Mother Carey

Blessing of the Backpacks and Briefcases

August 28th at 10:30 AM

Backpacks, tote bags, briefcases, and more will be blessed at our 10:30 a.m. service on August 28th. This is a great way to start the new school year, so don’t forget to bring your school or work bag to church. All are welcome to partake - children, college students, and more. Bring a friend! We are sure everyone has someone in their life that could use a blessing before the start of the new school year.

Office Volunteers Wanted

We need volunteers to answer the phone and assist Mother Carey on Wednesdays-Fridays. The hours of coverage is from 9:30 a.m. to Noon. If you can help, please call the parish office, 703-451-1088 or email sccparisha@gmail.com and let us know which days you can cover. Thank you in advance.

Holy Hike

Saturday, September 3rd at 10 AM

Neabsco Creek Boardwalk

15125 Blackburn Rd, Woodbridge, VA 22191

THE NEABSCO CREEK BOARDWALK is a ¾-mile boardwalk that traverses Neabsco Creek, allowing hikers access to wetlands where the tall grasses and marsh filter pollution from the river and provide a rich habitat for great blue herons, wood ducks, mallards, sparrow and red-winged blackbirds, just to name a few of the winged wildlife known to populate the area. My personal favorites are the green tree frogs that populate, not trees, but the reeds and grasses near the boardwalk. Here is a review of a master naturalist hike that took place at Neabsco and includes a sighting (and photo!) of a BLUE green tree frog.

It is flat, smooth hike with a short forested walk before we reach the boardwalk. There is no shade on the boardwalk, however, so sun protection and water is needed if it is hot and sunny.

We'll carpool from St. Christopher's at 9:15 am or, if you choose to drive yourself, we'll meet in the parking lot of the park. Lunch may follow the hike either as a picnic or at a local restaurant. Questions? Contact Janet Quinn at bandito8@verizon.net.

The St. Christopher's Choir has videoed hymn 673 in The Hymnal 1982, "The first one ever, oh ever, to know." Written by Linda Wilberger Egan, the hymn is a ballad about women in the life of Jesus. The choir sounds great! You can hear them on Linda's YouTube channel. In your search bar, type: YouTube Linda Wilberger Egan. There, you can also view two solos recently videoed at St. Christopher’s.

Please Welcome Our New Church Librarians!

Kay Croll and Mark Ingebretsen have agreed to take over the care of our church library located in the Education Building, the annex in the Fellowship Hall and the Little Free Library. Please be kind to them and check out books by filling out the card in the back and returning them in a timely manner. They are bibliophiles just like you and look forward to keeping great books accessible for all of us.

Book Discussion Group, September 20th at 2PM

The Book Discussion Group will meet on September 20th to discuss Karen Essex's Leonardo's Swans. According to journalist Mariella Radaelli, "Karen Essex makes scrupulous use of Leonardo's notebooks to craft a delicious story set in the court of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. She achieves this in a very skillful, flawless way, writing with true literary grace." And a critic for Booklist writes, "With lush, colorful descriptions, Essex brings to life the Sforza court and the competitive d'Este sisters' complex relationships with each other, their husbands, and Leonardo. Powerful historical fiction."

For more background on the great Leonardo, you may want to read the best-selling biography Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson (2017). Bill Gates writes, "More than any other Leonardo book I've read, this one helps you see him as a complete human being and understand just how special he was."
