A Prayer Service for an End to Divisions and for Healing

During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2022

January 19, 2022, 7:30 pm

Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington invites us, all Christian friends, family and neighbors to gather on Wednesday, January 19 at 7:30pm at Saint Bernadette Parish, brothers and sisters united by baptism, for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. We will focus our prayer to God for justice, peace, and the healing of divisions – physical, emotional, social and spiritual – especially as we continue to navigate a pandemic.

Mother Carey will be one of the participants in the service.

Saint Bernadette Church is located at 7600 Old Keene Mill Rd,

Springfield VA 22152.

Following CDC guidelines, all must wear a mask in public indoor settings.

Rarely have most of us lived in such a time of steady stress. This week grocery store shelves are not stocked as we are used to seeing. Our hospitals are struggling to meet the local needs and all of us are living with this low level, white noise of stress. Noticing it is the first step to finding good strategies to cope.

If you are feeling alone and needing to stay out of community, join us at St. Christopher’s on Wednesday for morning prayers, check in and great conversation. Laughter and tears guaranteed.

Join the monthly Saturday walking group for some brain clearing exercise out in the great out of doors. Dogs are welcome!

Be curious, Bishop Susan says, it gives us a dopamine hit. And look at all the ways Jesus was curious – Who do people say that I am? Who touched me? Why are you afraid? How many loaves do you have? “Daily curiosity was one of the tools he used to stay on course.”

Call a friend. Our PAT ministers are some of the most caring people I know and some of the best listeners. Let the office know you could use a call.

Remember that you are not alone.

Marifran's Musings as Senior Warden

My husband Richard often says the heart and soul of St. Christopher’s are our outreach programs. Because of our activities, we’ve received awards from the Diocese both to individuals and to the parish. Some of the activities we’ve participated in are no longer happening, such as hosting an AIDs weekend and offering USDA lunches in the summer, but we have started and continued others, such as our recent week of hosting the homeless during the Hypothermia Prevention Program (HPP) and preparing meals through FACETS for those who need food assistance. Although this year’s week for HPP was pared back for our volunteers because of COVID, we were able to host a highly successful week last week. The group was affable and very willing to help with cleanup during the snow storm when power was out in many places. We received news media recognition by WUSA, Channel 9, a CBS affiliate, for this work. Our parishioners pitch in time after time with active support, whether staying overnight during HPP, preparing meals, planting trees, gardening, or repairing the building, but also with monetary donations. As my term as senior warden and my vestry service draw to a close, I am extremely grateful for the support from the staff and parishioners to me and especially for the support of our many programs. Here’s wishing you a continued happy and blessed new year and Epiphany season.

Marifran Bustion,

Bible Study

Bible study is starting back up this Tuesday, January 18th! We will be exploring the Book of Daniel; no special book is necessary. We will be using the perfect book- our bibles! Multiple translations are encouraged as we delve into this interesting book. Our goal is to discuss the first 6 chapters before Lent; take a break during Lent, and then finish out the prophetic chapters (7-12) after Easter.

Our theme for our study of Daniel is: God is in Control

We will meet Tuesday nights from 7-8pm via Zoom; here is the schedule:

January 18th - Daniel 1

January 25th - Daniel 2

February 1st - Daniel 3

February 8th - Daniel 4

February 15th - Daniel 5

February 22nd - Daniel 6

We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday where we will read and discuss Daniel Chapter 1. The link will be sent out each week and listed below to download/import to your calendar; please let us know if you have any questions.

January Selection for the Book Discussion Group

We will be discussing Oil and Marble: A Novel of Leonardo and Michelangelo on Tuesday, January 18th, at 2 pm. RSVP Christine Meloni.

Vestry Nominations Open

We will soon have our annual meeting. At that time, one vote I know we’ll have is to elect new Vestry members. Four current members are rotating off, so we need four new members to join us for the 3-year period beginning February 2022. The Vestry’s responsibilities include Christian formation, outreach, innovation, parish life, maintaining and upgrading the physical plant and grounds, stewardship, finance, worship, and communication. It is exciting to be part of this group and a great way to get to know the business and spiritual aspects of St. Christopher’s. Eligible members of the Vestry are confirmed adult (16 years and older) communicants in good standing, known to the treasurer, and registered at St. Christopher’s. Although most of the meetings held during 2021 were via Zoom, we have recently started meeting in person with a sort of hybrid with zoom for those unable to meet inside. All persons are invited to join Vestry meetings and just need to let us know so we can send a zoom link. The Nominating Committee includes me, Bill Price, and Gail Ritchie. If you have any questions or are interested in being on the Vestry, please contact any of us , , or

Regathering Update

We continue to monitor the health conditions in our area closely in order to make worship and gathering for fellowship as safe as possible. By following these protocols we have been very successful at safely gathering without any spread of COVID in our St. Christopher's community.

According to Diocesan guidelines we follow the Brown School of Public Health metric for new infections and the CDC metric for rates of transmission in our area. The guidelines as set by our Bishop can be found here-

1.  Mail in checks to St. Christopher’s at 6320 Hanover Ave, Springfield VA 22150

2.  Set up electronic bill pay through your bank. You only need the Church's name and address.

3.   Set up a bank-to-bank transfer. Contact the St. C’s Treasurer if you want to do this.

4.   Via PayPal - Donate with PayPal Giving Fund. This is a no fee service, but donations will be delayed getting to the church for up to 45 days.

Thank you for your generosity and keeping up with your pledge. If you have other questions, please email Debbie Frear at Thank you.

Scam Reminder

We want you to be on the lookout for potential scams. As a reminder, the church, our staff, Vestry, clergy, parishioners will not request personal information, gift cards, or money over email or text. If you have the slightest bit of doubt about a communication from the church, please be sure to contact us directly.
