Welcome Summer!

Summer Services

You are invited to wear whatever makes your feel comfortable for your summer day. We lightly trim the service time by eliminating one reading and one hymn.

Sundays:  The Rev. Carey Connors, our Priest-in-Charge, is the celebrant for both services.

8 A.M. Indoor is a spoken Eucharist with no singing.

10:30 A.M. Indoor and Interactive service on Facebook with music followed by coffee hour.

Hi, everyone!

We are doing it a little bit differently for the warmer months when we prepare a cold tuna and pasta salad with chopped hard boiled eggs and veggies, spreading the preparation over two days.

On Wednesday, June 22:

We will prepare the dinner bags with dessert, fruit and utensils and leave them on tables overnight, since the preschool will not be in session. We will also prepare the pasta salad and refrigerate it overnight.

On Thursday, June 23:

A few volunteers will dish up the chilled salad into containers, load them into the cooler, and help the FACETS folks get everything into the van. FACETS will come to the church to pick up the food and will do the distribution for us.

You can help in a number of ways:

+ prepare food items ahead of time to bring on Wednesday, June 22;

+ come on Wednesday the 22nd and help with food assembly and packing food bags;

+ come on Thursday the 23rd and help dish up the pasta salad, then load the coolers and the FACETS van;

+ help with cleanup on either day.

We serve dinner to anywhere from 16 to 90 people. Our estimate for June 23 will be around 30-50 people, and a total of about 140 meals.

Thank you so much for your help!

Talking about Mission

The St. Christopher's Vestry has identified Hispanic Ministry as a mission priority. We are excited to begin reflecting and learning what God might be calling us to imagine. In the weeks and months ahead, we will be praying for our work during the Prayers of the People. We will also be gathering for both prayer and conversation about this new opportunity. While we have some ideas about how we might proceed, no decisions have been made. Your thoughts and responses are greatly appreciated. Join Margaret Kirk this Sunday in the St. Nicholas Chapel after the 10:30 am service for conversation about the ministry.

Sunday, June 26, 2022 after the 10:30 a.m. service

Reminder: Parish Picnic, Pot Luck and Celebration

Where: At St. Christopher's!

When: Sunday, June 26th right after the 10:30 a.m. service

What to bring: a side dish and a baked good

Who: Celebrating us, Zach Manning and Jacob Gudakunst

The Parish will provide drinks, hot dogs, hamburgers and a few vegan look-a-likes. Kids, there will be a sprinkler in case you want to come in your bathing suit! Baked goods are for our bingo game and cake walk, purchased is fine, homemade is divine!

Zach Manning is our high school graduate this year! We are also celebrating baby Jacob! After a year of intense care baby Jacob graduated from the NICU and the hospital! He is on to the next chapter of his little life at home with his grateful parents Doug and Dani.

There is a basket for Zach and Jacob in the fellowship hall, where you can drop off a card or gift.

Congratulations to Carroll Hill!

This weekend we had the remarkable joy of commissioning Carroll Hill as Verger at St. Christopher’s. The role of Verger goes back to the early church. In those days, the Verger would march through the streets of town, using their verge (to part the animals and carts) to lead the procession to church - which is why the Verger traditionally precedes the Cross in procession.

Carroll has done extensive study of the Prayer Book and our worship resources to qualify for this role. He will support our worship team each week in partnership with our Altar Chair and the Director of Acolytes. We are grateful to have Carroll's faithful witness to the ways in which lay ministries work together to create space that is both wide and beautiful for us to encounter God.

Happy 1 Year Anniversary!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has participated this past year as “Holy Hikers,” “Parish Pedalers” and “Parish Paddlers.” This June 26 marks the one-year anniversary of our first outing – a hike around Lake Accotink.

           It’s been a lot of fun with more to come. During the past year, our monthly activities have included treks around Burke Lake, Teddy Roosevelt Island, through the woods near Fort Belvoir and around the Tidal Basin for the cherry blossoms. Before Christmas, we embarked on a prayer walk around the St. Christopher’s neighborhood, stopping to pray for education, natural resources and life. Believe it or not, we’ve even gone to Paris! Virginia, that is, where Sky Meadows State Park is located. There, over Labor Day weekend, we enjoyed stunning views of the Virginia piedmont with all of the patchwork of green fields down below.

           Adventures await. Please keep your eye on the church newsletter and Sunday bulletin for upcoming events. We’ll aim to have activities the first Saturday morning of every month. We would love for you to join us. See you on the trail!

ECHO NEWS: June is our designated month in supporting ECHO. During that month, we try to collect as much food - and other things - as possible, from the list ECHO provides. This month, ECHO’s needs are for Men's and Teen Boy Clothing, Houseware, Working Window Laptop and Food Pantry needs are here: Needed Right Now.

We are open to accept donations every Sunday in June at both services by placing the items in the Outreach box and or contributing money to the St. Christopher's Outreach Fund.

LOOKING AHEAD FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH THIS SUMMER

What Will Happen?  Our School Supply Drive - Knowing that the children in our community elementary schools- Garfield, Crestwood and Lynbrook and those coming to ECHO for help- will have an even harder time this year to be able to provide the school supplies they are asked to bring to school we will ask you again - our community- to donate school supplies or the funds to purchase them for this outreach program. There will also be many other ways you can volunteer to help make this happen too. A list of the school supplies needed and the help needed will be available in early July, when the school supplies go on sale. Chas and Rosemary Henry have volunteered to share the leadership of this of this outreach with Don and Lynn Knox.  The usual kinds of information for you - Sunday Service bulletins, newsletter, announcements, and sign-up table in the Fellowship Hall will begin in early July.    Plan on being a part of responding to needs in our community!

INOVA Hospital is putting on a Pediatric Health Fair providing free school physicals for Medicaid and uninsured children only on June 25 in Falls Church, July 23 in Herndon and August 13 in Sterling. For details and the required appointments - call 703-698-2550.

Bird Book Missing from Library Annex Shelf:

A generous parishioner donated a bird book to our church library in recognition of our grounds being an Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. She placed it on a shelf of the Library Annex located in the church Fellowship Hall. I found the note accompanying the book, but the book itself is missing. If a bird book followed you home from church one day, would you please bring it back to the shelf of the Library Annex? I will add it to the library inventory and then you are welcome to check it out! Janet Quinn, bandito8@verizon.net.
