A Message from Mother Carey

RevCarey cover photo.jpg

Beloved,

Several years ago, as I gathered my third grade Sunday schoolers for class, I noticed a group deep in conversation. As I sidled closer, I heard them discussing - the best places in the classroom to hide if there was an active shooter. Many of them had been having active shooter drills at their schools for months. My heart broke as all our hearts are breaking following the horrific shootings that have occurred in Buffalo and now in Texas.

This week as we acknowledge the Jesus’ Ascension to God, we are reminded that Jesus showed us, the Holy Spirit equips us, and that God’s agency is in us. Prayer and action go hand in hand; one leads to the

other and one is shaped and informed by the other.

Hear the words of David Reed, Bishop of West Texas:

“And we can pray. We must pray. Ignore the cynics, and pray with all your heart. Let your cries reach to the heavens. Let your anger and despair be your prayer. And listen to God answering in return. Look for God’s tears revealed and listen for his perfect and righteous anger. Give yourself over to opportunities to join in the Spirit’s work of binding up and healing. Love with all you’ve got, and never, ever surrender to the darkness.”

O God our Father, whose beloved Son took children into his arms and blessed them: Give us grace to entrust your beloved children of Uvalde to your everlasting care and love, and bring them fully into your heavenly kingdom. Pour out your grace and loving-kindness on all who grieve; surround them with your love; and restore their trust in your goodness. We lift up to you our weary, wounded souls and ask you to send your Holy Spirit to take away the anger and violence that infects our hearts, and make us instruments of your peace and children of the light.

In the Name of Christ who is our hope, we pray. Amen.

Thank you to our Interim Music Director! May 29 is our last day with Linda Egan serving as St. Christopher's Interim Music Director. We wish her all the best as she moves on to other plans. Linda brought us through the musically challenging seasons of Lent and Easter with gentle leadership and considerable organ and directing talents. For her service and gifts shared among us, we give thanks!

Fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection, the Holy Spirit came to his followers in wind and fire. We celebrate the great gift of the Holy Spirit. Be sure to wear red and wave scarves to represent the fire and the wind.

Foreign Language Speakers needed

Our Pentecost tradition includes reading the Acts in as many languages as possible, all at once. If you are comfortable to read at church in a language other than English and you are willing to participate in the festivities, please email Deb Kim at ddoehrkim@gmail.com to help.
