A Message from Mother Carey

Dear Friends,

Living alongside COVID means that we have learned to mask in some settings and not in others. We have learned to check the local metrics frequently as we decide the places we will go.

This Sunday we will begin offering wine in a way that honors safety and our theology of being a people who share one cup. This Sunday we will offer wine along with the bread at the Communion rail. The paten, the plate on which the bread is resting, will have a small glass of wine. If you would like the wine, the Eucharistic Minister or I will intinct, dipping the bread in the wine, and place the bread (dipped wine in your hand). I continue to remind us all that communion in one kind is full participation in communion. I am hopeful that this will give us a way to sustainably return the wine back to our practice. We do not know how long this will be necessary, but for now, we live alongside with hope.

St. Christopher's Outreach Update

The Outreach Committee met on Sunday, May 1st. Key takeaways were:

(1) All of our principal ministries are healthy and productive. We need more volunteers in some areas, in particular the Outreach Garden and the December School Holiday Food Program.

(2) Mother Carey will be happy to bless, at the altar, the many tangible things we regularly provide to the community, such as the non-perishable food items we collect for ECHO, fruits and vegetables from the Outreach Garden, and toys we collect during the December Toy Drive. The Outreach Committee will work with the Worship Committee to make this happen. (3) St. Christopher’s may soon embrace another outreach ministry, namely providing computer literacy instruction to Spanish-speaking adults. Our role will be to provide the Auditorium as a meeting area, and use of our internet access. Minutes of the meeting are here.  Would you like to join in planning and coordinating these and other efforts to Serve Christ in Others? Contact Gail Ritchie or John Quinn . (Click on the names for email)

Lynbrook Elementary School, on Backlick Road in Springfield, needs volunteers during school hours to help children check out books and to reshelve books. Volunteers, preferably bilingual in English and Spanish, are needed on Saturdays and during the week to read to children at the laundromat on Commerce Street, while their parent(s) do the laundry. The GrandInvolve organization is coordinating both efforts. For more information, please contact Michele Duell at, or John Quinn

Each spring, our preschool board recruits two new members to take the place of those rolling off at the end of their three-year terms. It's that time again! The six-member board works with the priest, the vestry liaison, and the preschool director and bookkeeper to guide our preschool. Service on the preschool board is a great way to get to know the workings of the preschool and the larger church, not to mention some of your fellow parishioners! As volunteer gigs go, this one is nearly effortless: your commitment is one evening meeting per month, with no meeting in July. The board has been meeting via Zoom and plans to continue using this convenient format. You don't even have to leave your house! Please contact the current preschool board chair, Jen Guernsey, at or (703) 887-6485 for more information or to volunteer.

Book Discussion Group's May Selection. May 17th at 5:30 PM
The Book Discussion Group will meet on Tuesday, May 17th, to discuss Christy Lefteri's The Bee Keeper of Aleppo. "This unforgettable novel puts human faces on the Syrian war with the immigrant story of a beekeeper, his wife, and the triumph of spirit when the world becomes unrecognizable." (amazon) “A beautifully crafted novel of international significance that has the capacity to have us open our eyes and see.”—Heather Morris, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz

We will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 in person at St. Christopher's. Everyone is welcome to attend. Contact Christine Meloni for questions or to RSVP at If you need a ride, contact Mary Johnson at

Our position description for a Music Director and Organist has been crafted and posted to the American Organist Guild, Anglican Musicians and on the Diocesan job page and shared locally. We hope to hire someone this summer to start with us in the fall. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please direct them to our website for more information.

In the meantime, we have been graced with the talent of Linda Eagan, our interim Music Director, and by the gifts of our local musicians, the St. Christopher’s Choir and our new, great, St. Christopher’s Travelin’ Band. Stay tuned for updates about the search and for places and times to hear our Band play.
