A Message from Mother Carey

Dear St. Christopher’s Family,

This weekend we kick off the program year and in doing so reclaim a little sacred space. Classes will be flexible and creative to meet the needs of our growing families and Zooming adults as we continue to do ministry in the age of a pandemic. I am so grateful for the willingness of our members to share their gifts with us all through teaching and leading discussion groups and helping to plan new ways to be in community!

Worship will reclaim some space as well. Those who attend the indoor 10:30 am service will be able to receive Communion kneeling or standing in a circle around the altar on slightly distanced altar kneelers. A new space has been created by the lectern for families with small children, a small rug with worship packets to welcome children right into our midst.

It feels so good to return to beloved ways even as we continue to keep our community safe. God continues to bless us and to equip us to a place of growth and mission in the world.

Marifran’s Musings as Senior Warden

When Richard and I moved to Burke from Texas, we were very pleased with how diverse our new neighborhood was. The family living across the street from us are all from Afghanistan. We’ve gotten to know them over the years, but with recent events, we’ve talked a lot more and

have discovered some of what they’re doing with the refugees in Northern Virginia.

Below in this newsletter is a letter from ECHO with information on how we can all assist. Please read it and consider how you can help, not just with this situation, but with other events and activities. This was brought to mind for me just a couple of weeks ago with the lesson from a letter from James as he reminds us to “be doers of the word and not merely hearers ... they will be blessed in

their doing.”

St. Christopher’s Shrine Mont Parish Weekend UPDATE

Please join us for a weekend away in the Shenandoah Mountains to relax, refresh, pray and play!

Our theme for this year’s retreat is Connect – Renew – Grow! Mother Carey will lead us through activities and discussions that will help us to connect to one another, to renew our relationship with God, and to grow ourselves and our parish after we return from the mountain. Our program will align with Shrine Mont’s mission of being “A Place Apart” which has a new meaning for us as we emerge back into normalcy.

Please see below for Shrine Mont’s updated COVID-19 guidelines. Note that Shrine Mont does not require visitors to be vaccinated against COVID-19, but guests are asked to wear masks in all public indoor spaces including dining rooms until you sit down to eat.

We will increase the number of activities that we hold outdoors, including holding evening prayer and morning prayer outside. Note that our Sunday morning worship is always held outdoors at the Shrine as well as our evening stargazing and Friday evening bonfire.

See below for a high-level schedule of the weekend’s activities. Please note that everything is optional, and this weekend is yours to spend as you see fit.

DEADLINE: Please submit your registration and deposit by Sunday, October 3.

Join us to learn more about Sacred Ground

An Adult Christian Education Program

Sunday, September 12 following the 10:30 am service

Sacred Ground is a sensitive, film based class invites us into difficult and transformative conversation on racism. It invites participants to walk back through history in order to peel away the layers that brought us to today, sharing our own family histories and stories, as well as important narratives that shape the collective American story.

It holds the vision of beloved community – where all people are honored and protected and nurtured as beloved children of God, where we seek one another’s flourishing.

Join leaders Janet Quinn and Gail Ritchie for a slice of pizza on September 12, 2021 and an organizational meeting under the breezeway (weather permitting) or on in the parish hall, masks needed.

Book Discussion Group

Tuesday, September 21 at 7PM

We will be meeting (via zoom) at 2 pm on Tuesday, September 21, to discuss The Book of Longings by Susan Monk Kidd. "Grounded in meticulous research and written with a reverential approach to Jesus's life that focuses on his humanity, The Book of Longings is an inspiring, unforgettable account of one woman's bold struggle to realize the passion and potential inside her, while living in a time, place and culture devised to silence her. It is a triumph of storytelling both timely and timeless, from a masterful writer at the height of her powers." ( Janet Bush will be the facilitator. If you plan to attend, notify Janet Quinn and she will send you the link.
