BEST OF THE WEEK
FEBRUARY 22 - FEBRUARY 26, 2016

Every Friday this school year, "Best of the Week" will recognize
St. Edward High School's commitment to authentic instruction by
highlighting the people and programs that define the St. Ed's experience.

LESSON OF THE WEEK
STUDYING OTHER FAITH PRACTICES - BUDDHISM
The Vatican II Dogmatic Constitution on the Church LUMEN GENTIUM says: "Whatever good or truth is found amongst them is looked upon by the Church as a preparation for the Gospel. She knows that it is given by Him who enlightens all men so that they may finally have life." As such, the second semester of the senior year theology curriculum studies world religions, encouraging students to explore the beliefs, values, and traditions of a variety of religions practiced across the globe.

This week, Mr. Merriman's seniors began studying Buddhism. Throughout their studies students incorporated meditation into their daily prayer and tried to exercise mindfulness as a disciplined approach to their Lenten journey.  Students are also reading Siddhartha, a novel by Herman Hesse that relays the story of Siddhartha, a young man who leaves his home in the hopes of attaining spiritual enlightenment.

Mr. Merriman emphasized the importance of studying other faith practices because it challenges individuals to think deeply about what they believe in regards to their faith and the Truth, but also to think deeply about how we relate to others whose beliefs about the Truth may be different. This is taught by the Church when it says, "The Catholic Church rejects nothing that is true and holy in [other] religions. She regards with sincere reverence those ways of conduct and of life, those precepts and teachings which, though differing in many aspects from the ones she holds and sets forth, nonetheless often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all men. Indeed, she proclaims, and ever must proclaim Christ "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6), in whom men may find the fullness of religious life, in whom God has reconciled all things to Himself.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK
MR. DANIEL CAVOLI
S t. Edward High School is very proud of legendary Latin teacher Mr. Daniel Cavoli, who received word this week that he is being honored with the Kraft Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching by The Classical Association of the Middle West and South.   Named for CAMWS benefactor Eunice E. Kraft, this award recognizes outstanding teachers of Latin in public or private schools.

Mr. Cavoli has long been a pillar of the St. Edward Community and is a model for excellence in teaching and is well known for the outpouring of hospitality he offers to all those he encounters at St. Edward.  His commitment to forming our young men in the Holy Cross tradition is unparalleled.

Congratulations, Mr. Cavoli, on this well-deserved honor!

THE WOW FACTOR!
MOCK TRIAL TEAM HEADS TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Mock Trial is an academic program that gives students an opportunity to expand their speaking, writing, reading, and analytical skills while learning about the workings of the American judicial system. Through their experiences students learn the value of team work and collaboration, while strengthening their critical thinking skills and their ability to face challenging obstacles with enthusiasm, professionalism and confidence. For the second year in a row, St. Edward's Mock Trial Team Andre, composed of members Greg Margevicius, Aidan McIntyre, Colin Pender, Nick Taylor, Justin Herold, Tae Terrel, Connor Ling and Brian Mingus, will travel to the Ohio Statehouse March 10-12  to compete in the state championship.

Guided by the leadership of Mrs. Suzanne Fairfield and Mrs. Mary Kate Hermann, with the help and support of legal eagles, John Duffy, Jim Niehaus and John Wargo, Team Andre is heading into the state championship after Greg Margevicius Colin Pender won best attorneys and Connor Ling and Brian Mingus won best witnesses at the regional championship.

Congratulations, Eagles!
