BEST OF THE WEEK
NOVEMBER 16 - NOVEMBER 20, 2015

Every Friday this school year, "Best of the Week" will recognize
St. Edward High School's  commitment to authentic instruction by
highlighting the people and programs  that define the St. Ed's experience.

LESSON OF THE WEEK
EXPERT MAP READING FARRELL MCHUGH '69
Sophomore Human Geography students were treated to a visit by St. Edward Alumnus Farrell McHugh '69,  a retired U.S. State Department official who has served in various roles in the U.S. Intelligence Community.  His speciality is internal defense and development in developing countries during insurgencies and counter-insurgencies.  He has served in Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.  Since September 11, 2001 he has served in Bosnia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

He guided students through the importance of map reading, especially during military operations.  During his tenure with the government he taught Peace Corps and entry level government officials on map reading.  McHugh shared many different types of maps, including survival maps, and helped students understand the critical aspects of scale, measurement and orientation.

In an era when most students are only used to navigating via Google Maps, they gained a much clearer understanding of why reading different types of maps requires high levels of critical thinking.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK
MRS. MOIRA O'RIORDAN
College counseling is an incredibly important component of the St. Edward experience, and we are proud to have one of the most experienced and highly regarded college counseling staffs in the country, including Mrs. Moira O'Riordan, Mr. Geoff Morton, Mrs. Desi Gould and Mr. Tom Splawski.

Beyond busy days filled with helping students and parents discover the right college fit and navigate the process, Mrs. O'Riordan has partnered with St. Edward Alumni and Student Life to create a new program called Connections.   Connections provides opportunities for St. Edward students to explore a variety of careers, hone their resume writing and interviewing skills, and develop professional mentor relationships with fellow St. Edward Alumni once in college.  The program will kick off this month with the first "Pizza and a Professional" lunch on campus where students will meet with alumni currently working in different professional fields.

For her work preparing our students for a bright future, Mrs. O'Riordan is the Teacher of the Week!
