Alumnus Andrew Hernandez ’23 (University of Michigan): “The Counseling Department at St. Francis was extremely helpful. My counselors worked with me to choose challenging, but not impossible classes that would set me up for success in the future. They also helped me during my college admissions process to narrow down my list of schools and answer any and all college-related questions that I had. I would say that St. Francis’ extensive curriculum and extracurricular offerings helped me learn skills such as time management, responsibility, and leadership which prepared me for life in college.”
Alumna Amari Talluri-Boye ’23 (University of Wisconsin - Madison): “I am SO thankful to SFHS for helping me through my college application process. I am the oldest child in my family and was completely unaware of all the ins and outs of applications. I was stressed because there was so much I didn’t know. My counselors were incredibly supportive and met with me countless times to answer any and every question I had. They are ALL amazing people with extraordinary insight into the entire process. Ultimately, they helped me find my new home at UW Madison, majoring in psychology on the pre-health track.
Another aspect of SFHS that I am incredibly grateful for is how well-prepared I feel academically. My rigor of courses at St. Francis fulfilled nearly all my General Education requirements, so I started college taking higher-level, major-requirement courses. I am confident that the robust academic foundation built during my time at SFHS has equipped me with the work ethic, time management, and study skills necessary to thrive amongst the challenging demands of higher education.
Alumnus Connor Shields ’23 (University of Notre Dame): “The SFHS Counseling Department greatly assisted me with searching for schools, applications, and any last minute panic questions I had for them (of which there were many). They helped me set realistic goals and acquire the coursework necessary for my target schools. My counselor even took time out of his vacation over Christmas Break to send me materials for a last-minute application. I have a huge amount of gratitude for the unwavering care they show for each and every student.
My SFHS education has been hugely helpful in preparing me for an academically rigorous university. I learned how to manage deadlines and projects while still participating in clubs and athletics. The study habits St. Francis taught me have given me a jump start on many of my classmates in college, and I feel comfortable balancing my coursework with my passions outside of school. I feel that SFHS truly lived up to the "College Prep” title, and I’m glad it did.”
Alumna Nicole Khawl ’23 (College of the Holy Cross) “The Counseling Department has helped me with college planning, especially financial aid. My major worry was about affording college and my counselor really helped me with searching for schools and scholarships. He was also supportive of my application for the QuestBridge Scholarship. He did all the paperwork needed from the chool and met with me to check in often, which really helped. He believed in me too. Thankfully, I won the scholarship! So, I’m extremely thankful for the department’s support.
In addition, I have noticed how my St. Francis education has really impacted my studies, especially the English department. I have noticed that my professors often compliment my writing, and my peers ask me for help with papers as well. I feel confident in balancing my schoolwork and work as well. Being able to be involved in many clubs and organizations at St. Francis really helped me with time management in college too. Strategies I used for homework, free time, and also making time for my clubs are still following me to college. Overall, I’m doing really great at college!”
