Rector's Reflection: 'They Went Up the Mountain to Pray'

Thursday is the Feast of the Transfiguration, which celebrates one of the most wondrous scenes in Jesus' ministry and reminds us that God’s glorious love is not something to be postponed. Heaven is already breaking into this world, often in the most unexpected ways. I love how the Gospel of Luke’s version of the transfiguration starts with Jesus taking Peter, John, and James to the top of a mountain to pray. As a native of the Pacific Northwest, that imagery has always grabbed me. Where I grew up, the Cascade mountains define the horizons. These giants of the sky call out to be climbed. And like a lot of people, I’ve marched skyward, making my way to the top of countless peaks, hoping to get closer to God. I did just that during my recent Summer Sabbath in Washington and Oregon. Landscaping Day, Saturday, August 8, 9 a.m.

Continuing the St. Francis Landscaping Day tradition the second Saturday of the month, come join us next Saturday, August 8th at 9:00 a.m., by meeting at the New Church, 2810 Long Ridge Road, and doing the joyful work of keeping our church properties in tip top shape throughout summer and autumn.

Movie Club: 'Remarkably Bright Creatures,' August 23, 4 p.m.

The St. Francis Movie Club will meet in the Historic Church Meeting Room at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, to discuss "Remarkably Bright Creatures." The 2026 film tells the heartwarming story of a widow, a drifting young man, and a remarkably smart giant Pacific octopus who helps them connect and solve a decades-old family mystery. It can be viewed on Netflix.

As you can see by the thermometer, we are well on our way to achieving our goal of reaching $25,000 for this years' beneficiary, INTEMPO! The in-person event will take place September 20th, and the Virtual event will be Sept. 14 - 20.

Communion Beyond Church: Volunteer to be a St. Francis LEV

One of the most beautiful and foundational lay ministries at St. Francis is serving as a Lay Eucharistic Visitor (LEV). LEVs bring Holy Communion blessed in community during Sunday worship to parishioners who are unable to join us, carrying not only the precious sacrament but also the prayers, love, and presence of the entire community. It is a ministry of compassion, connection, and hope that reminds our homebound friends they remain a vital part of the Body of Christ. If you feel called to this ministry, we'd love to welcome you. Our next LEV training will take place over breakfast on the second Saturday, Sept. 12. If you would like to learn more or explore whether this ministry is right for you, please contact Rev.
