UCI Campus Ministry
Many thanks to EVERYONE who's donated food and other items for UCI students.

This week, I learned from Sherry & Kent & Diane that the NBC-TV Today Show was on the campus, filming a story about food-insecurity among students!

Unfortunately, they didn't interview our folks, but we're still excited anyway! The gift is in the conversations with students.

Volunteers are still needed. Please contact the office.
A New Face on Campus ..
Meet Joshua Wong
Joshua Wong has joined our staff as a part-time ministry developer.

With his assistance, we are hoping to create: an art mentoring program for college and high school students; a bible study and The Gathering-OC, for Asian Americans & Friends to meet and worship.

A support team for this ministry includes: Bob Howe, Mercedese Bantz and Joyce Swaving and Rev Pat.

Bishops John Taylor rand Diane Bruce have approved and are very excited about this new ministry effort, as we continue to reach out to the community around us.
You will be seeing Joshua some Sundays, as he will be participating in worship. Please give him a warm St. George's welcome!

He can be reached at: [email protected]

I asked him to share his bio:

Dear St. George-ans:

I am from Hong Kong and immigrated with my family to LA in the 1960s. My father was a pastor to the Chinese community in Santa Barbara and the Central Coast. I spent my life serving in different capacities and enjoyed learning many aspects of church service.

We moved permanently to L.A. where I attended school.

I received a full scholarship to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, earning a B.A. in Advertising & Illustration.

After college I worked as a creative director in many advertising agencies launching campaigns for United Airlines, The Disney Channel, IBM and many others. After 13 years in advertising, I moved to New York City and discovered the world of fashion, working for Ralph Lauren women’s footwear collection and as a runway designer.

Before leaving the Big Apple, I was the vice president of footwear design for Banana Republic. Now, I am a design consultant and for the past 3 years have been a guest speaker and mentor for high school and college students in L.A. and O.C., who want careers in fashion.

In New York, I met my husband Edward and in 2004, we moved to our home in Corona del Mar. Eventually we moved to Pasadena, where we now reside.

I was confirmed at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in New York City and now we are regular members at Thad’s Episcopal Church in Culver City. There, I lead the artist ministry group and occasionally preach. Thad’s is also my sponsoring parish through the recent completion of my discernment process toward becoming an Episcopal priest.

My calling is to develop the Asian American ministry and advance the LGBTQx and the artist communities in our diocese. It has been a blessing to be a part of the planning committee of The Gathering, a Diocesan ministry to the Asian American community, as well as the Chinese Ministry Advisory Committee helping with the Cantonese fellowship group. In the fall of 2019, I will be a full time Masters of Divinity seminarian at Bloy House/Claremont School of Theology.

I enjoy relaxing with our one-year-old standard poodle Yo-Yo, playing my cello, drawing and baking.

Lynn Holland is
graduating!
Lynn Holland is graduating from the Art of Spiritual Direction Training Program of the Stillpoint Center for Spirituality, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

Spiritual directors are experienced listeners and privileged witnesses in the spiritual unfolding of another person.

Spiritual directors provide a one-on-one focus on the relationship with God of those they serve.

The graduation is at 3pm Saturday, May 18 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles.

Congratulations Lynn!
El Toro Interchange Update
On Tuesday evening this week, I attended the Laguna Hills City Council meeting, with Chuck Day, Muriel Witham and Jon Petke.

I addressed the council about St. George's concerns about the El Toro Project, seeking solutions.

Also addressing the board were numerous city residents, who oppose current plans to redevelop Laguna Hills Mall with high density residential units, adding more traffic. We'll keep you posted!

Dear St. George-ans:

Grace and Peace to You in Our Lord Jesus Christ!

You are invited to attend an Interfaith event at St. George's from 2:30PM to 4PM on Sunday, May 19.

Please make every effort to attend what promises to be an enlightening and enlivening conversation.

Reasons to Contact Rev. Pat :
An effort towards improved communication

Did you know that I pray for you every day? My days and weeks are spent praying for you, and visiting those within our community to share in those things that make you happy and sometimes make you sad. I am there, and I want to be there to share those life moments with you.

So you may ask when is the most appropriate time to connect with your priest about all those things happening in your life!
Well for starters :
  • When you are in need of prayer
  • When you miss Church more than two weeks in a row
  • When you are going to the hospital to address a surgery or illness
  • When you arrive in the hospital and have been assigned a room
  • When you would like to receive Holy Communion or Eucharist
  • When you have a birth in the family
  • When you have a death in the family
  • When you need assistance
  • When you want to celebrate good news
  • When you need to share bad news
  • When you want to schedule something at the Church
  • When you need information about St. George's life

Contact can be as simple as a direct phone call, a text message or an email. So reach out and allow the holiness of all our lives to be shared.

  • Will you bring me home communion?
  • Can you loan me some money?
  • I need your help with ...
  • I heard about someone in need of pastoral care.
  • I have a great new idea about an exciting new ministry!
  • My loved ones names are misspelled on the prayer list ...
  • The birthdays in the bulletin need to be updated.
  • I disagree with what Rev. Pat said about ...
  • I have concerns about where the church is headed.
  • I'd love to join the worship team or get involved in other activities.

Contact can be as simple as a direct phone call, a text message or an email.

Ongoing Events, Opportunities ...
Exciting New Ministry Partners for St. George's!
Dear St. George-ans:

As we continue to live into God's call to us to love and serve our neighbor, an exciting opportunity has come our way--to partner with Canterbury--the Episcopal Chaplaincy at UCI.

Two other churches are also partnering with the campus. Our
role will be to work with students who are food-insecure. That is, they are often forced to choose between buying books and eating.

Beginning May 6, we will launch this ministry, by being on hand at 8:30AM to offer students peanut butter, jelly, and bread and our presence, at the campus FRESH Basic Needs Hub.

St. George's Administrator Diane Pound and I have met with Andrea Gutierrez, the hub's director, and learned that each Monday, the Second Harvest Food Bank makes deliveries of food and students begin lining up early.

We plan to set up a table with PB&J and bread, invite them to make their own sandwiches and engage with them in conversation.

There is an interest among other congregations in Deanery 10 to participate in this ministry as well and we are in the process of organizing that effort. This is a year-round ministry and we are considering possibly engaging at least 3 other congregations, including St. George's, and that each of us will take a certain Monday of the month, to offer this ministry.

If you would like to volunteer to assist, please contact Diane at:

A Note of Thanks
from SCO!
A huge THANK YOU to all St. George's people who responded to our request for breakfast bars and oatmeal.

Keep it coming, please! The pantry is significantly low at present and always needs the other staples as well: peanut butter, jelly, canned chicken and tuna, breakfast cereals, rice, beans, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks, etc.
St. George's gave 71 pounds of food in March and during April the barrels have been filled more often! THANK YOU!

There is also a great ongoing need for volunteers to do various tasks such as working in the food pantry stocking shelves or walking through with clients to assist them with selecting their food items. If you can help, contact Tiffany Ficke at
(949) 380-8144, X 217.

Thanks to all!
Plans are underway for this year's Corazon volunteer construction trip to Tijuana, where we'll again build a home for a needy family, working side-by-side with our friends at the Mission Viejo mosque. On each of the last three trips, Muslim pre-teens, teenagers and young adults were enthusiastic members of the work party. This year, they hope to be joined by Christian pre-teens, teenagers and young adults.

Do you have children or grandchildren who might be interested in attending on one Saturday in the fall? (Exact date not yet chosen). Please contact Colin Stewart with questions or for further information at (949) 439-5553 or email at [email protected].
