September 19, 2018 - Walking Together in Faith
Empathy - St. Teresa of Calcutta
Dear St. Isidore School Families,

The last thing we cannot change, according to Father Kasper’s homily, is that “People are not loving and loyal all the time.” He encouraged us as a people to not retaliate: “Do not repay evil with evil.” This is a challenge in self-control. As humans we react quickly, and our instinct is to get even or get back at someone. This also ties into what St. James told us in the Gospel on Sunday, which is don’t tell me your faith, show me. Our faith asks us to see the good in the church. Catholic schools are the manifestation of the good in our church and faith. The model of Catholic education has been copied by many educational institutions as the best way to teach, using our foundations of strong academics and solid character education. Let’s Walk Together in Our Faith and show goodness, love, and loyalty to one another.

SIS Golf Classic: What a wonderful day! Our golf classic was held Monday, and it was a beautiful day. The golfers had fun while enjoying spending time with friends. The dinner that evening was a hit, too. Many parents were able to come and enjoy an evening of food, community, and fun. Thank you again to Michelle Czarnik and PTG for all you did to make this event a success. Definitely something to look forward to next year.

Goal Setting Conferences: Conferences are around the corner. Parent-teacher conferences are meant to be a time to discuss your child’s habits and to review goals for the school year. Students in grades three through eight should attend the conference with parents to show we are all working together to help them succeed. The conference sign ups will be posted in Schoology under the SIS Parent Resources section on Friday at 6 p.m. Be sure you are logged in to Schoology to access this sign-up form. If you have questions about logging into Schoology, please call the school office.

Challenge Success : On September 13, our school hosted Challenge Success for a parent education event titled The Well-Balanced Student. Mary Hofstedt shared current research along with practical strategies for our families to support their children’s health, resilience, and engagement in learning. To learn more about the topics we explored, please see the resource list and links from Challenge Success, provided below. If you were not able to attend the presentation in person, or would like to share the presentation with other members of your family, you can view a  video of the Well-Balanced Student (K-8) at no cost through September 30 . To view, click on the video link, select the "rent" option, and apply the promo code  StIsidore. After September 30, the video is available for viewing for a fee of $19. We are so grateful for your participation in events and conversations like these, and for all you do to support your student(s) and our school community.

School Safety: We are still seeing parents walking on campus to drop off a lunch or quickly tell their child something. Please do not come on campus, even for a few minutes, without checking in at the front office. Also, it has come to my attention that there are some parents behaving badly in our carpools. As a reminder, if you are using the Kinder line in the morning, you must go through the courtyard loop and not cut off another family by trying to scoot into the church line.

Also, some parents are still on their phone in carpool. This is dangerous when driving around little children, even if yours are no longer little. Please do not text your children while they are in carpool, as students are not allowed to use their phones on the school campus, including right in front of the office. Please consult our school handbook, which is located at www.stisidore.org , for rules and regulations. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your cooperation and partnership.

Have a good week,

Peace,
Maria Ward
Principal

Challenge Success
Our Challenge Success Team recently returned from their weekend conference at Stanford University. Our team consists of Mrs. Devine, Mrs. Torretta, Mrs. Tripaldi and Mrs. Castillo. They worked with our Challenge Success Coach, collaborated on a Mission Statement and attended workshops on various educational subjects. The Mission Statement was derived from the survey our students took last year as well as our hopes and goals for our school. We will be sharing that and the most current up to date research, regarding keeping the life of a student balanced in today's fast pasted world, with you in upcoming weekly newsletters.

Library Corner
The Library would like to thank Bella & Samantha Ferguson, as well as Bennett & Sidney Smith. These four students had a lemonade stand over the summer and raised over $30. They decided to donate all the profits to the library because they "love" books! Great job kids! We applaud both your love of reading and your giving spirit. If you would like to sign up to volunteer in the library, please click here .
Science Fair Mentors
Do you work as a scientist or engineer, or have a science, engineering, technology, or other related degree? Are you interested in encouraging young students' appreciation of science? If so, please consider serving as a mentor this year to help our students with hypothesis generation, experimentation, data analysis, and eventually their Science Fair presentation. We are looking for mentors, familiar with the scientific method, that can be available to meet and discuss project details with students during the specified times below. Mentors will need to have completed the Safe Environment Training (VIRTUS) and fingerprinting prior to volunteering. Guidance for the mentors will be provided and it counts toward PEP hours. Click here t o sign up to volunteer. Any questions, please contact our Science Fair Judge Coordinators, Teresa Wegesser, wegesser@amgen.com & Bryan Terry, bryanterry@gmail.com
