Walking Together in Faith
Hospitality - St. Isidore the Farmer - Volunteer Week A
Dear St. Isidore Families,

Welcome back!  Our campus was electrified with such energy and excitement for our first day yesterday. Surprisingly, there weren’t many tears—from students or parents!

We have been busy this summer with updating our campus and continuing our education to better serve our students. Many of our teachers take time during the summer to participate in classes to improve their instructional practices, and I am truly grateful for this. We have a fabulous faculty and staff.

Last week, all school faculty members throughout the Oakland Diocese met at the Cathedral of Christ the Light. We began the day with mass with Fr. John Casper as the homilist and ended with a pep talk from our superintendent, Kathleen Radecke.  Fr. Casper began with Five Things We Cannot Change. This was definitely a subject that left us pondering.

Over the next few weeks, I will present a portion of what was discussed during Fr. Casper’s homily and how it applies to the St. Isidore School community. The first thing we cannot change is: Things don’t always go according to plan. We’ve seen firsthand that this is true, as the Welcome Coffee did not go as planned. No matter how hard we try, things do not always turn out as expected. I apologize for the lack of coffee and treats as is customary. However, I do think things happen for a reason. It was great to see so many families hanging around and welcoming each other back to school regardless. Thank you for your understanding.

We Are St. Isidore School : If you haven’t seen the videos on our website, please click here to watch and let us know what you think.  We are so excited to share these with the community. Feel free to post them on your Facebook or Twitter feeds, as our school families are our best advertising.

Volunteer Meeting Canceled:  The volunteer meeting, scheduled this week, has been canceled. Please look for volunteer information and sign-off sheet requirements in the family envelope next week.

Back to School Social :  Our Back to School Social is this Friday, August 24th, from 5 to 8pm, on the field behind the church parking lot. Food trucks will serve dinner and desserts, so please stop by for a bite, even if you have other activities to attend.  Register Here!

Back to School Nights:   Grades TK–5 will have Back to School Night next Tuesday, August 28, while grades 6–8 will meet on Thursday, August 30. The evenings will consist of a group meeting in the church. Afterward, there will be two classroom sessions for grades TK–5.  Middle school parents will meet in your child’s homeroom, and the teachers will rotate through. Both evenings will end by 8 pm. We look forward to sharing all of the improvements we have made this summer.

Lunch Room Info: If you are bringing in lunch for your child, please follow the rules listed in the parent student handbook, page 11 . There will be a cart, in the front office, where you can drop your child's lunch. It will be brought over for lunchtime. Therefore, no parent should be on campus without checking in the office and getting a visitor's badge.

CYO: Basketball Registration, for grades 3-8, is still open and will end on August 28th. Please click here for more info.

Have a great rest of your week!

Sincerely,

Maria Ward

Top Ten Back-to-School Tips to Help Your Child Thrive
  1. Ask your child: “How was your day? Learn anything interesting? Get to spend time with friends?” instead of “How did you do on the math test?”
  2. Resist the urge to correct the errors in your child’s homework. It’s your child’s work, not yours.
  3. Work done with integrity is more important than an A. Pressure to achieve only high grades can make students resort to cheating.
  4. Make time for PDF: playtime, downtime, family time. Research shows PDF is critical for overall well-being.
  5. Create a technology-free environment during mealtimes. Every adult and child can benefit from a break from constant interruptions and distractions.
  6. Collaborate with your child’s teachers. Assume best intentions and work together to solve problems.
  7. Fight the temptation to bring your child’s forgotten homework to school. Kids gain resilience by learning from small failures.
  8. An extra hour of sleep is more valuable than an extra hour of studying. Research shows sleep deprivation can be associated with depression and anxiety.
  9. When your child wants to talk with you, stop what you are doing and engage. Does “I hate school” really mean something else: “I am being bullied” or “I don’t fit in?”
  10. Help your child develop his or her interests and strengths. Discover what your child really loves to do outside of school, not what you think a college admissions officer would like to see on an application.
