News & Events

I Spy St. James! Can you? Every Sunday, our parish's patron, St. James, will be on the move to a new location in the parish hall. As the patron of walkers and pilgrims, he's decided to join us on our own pilgrimage to Stillwell Hall for a little fun. Kids and youth, be on the lookout and if you locate him, make sure you tell one of the clergy so they can let you choose a sticker or piece of candy at the altar. If you spy St. James, make sure not to move him so others can find him too!

Get texts from St. James! We're trying a new communication tool called Remind. Receive brief texts for important events and updates from St. James. Simply use your cell phone to text the code "@f368b89" to the number 81010. You should receive no more than 1 text a week.

The St. James Endowment Fund Board announces that applications for Endowment Awards will be accepted through July 15, 2023. The Endowment Board may recommend disbursements, with Vestry approval, for (1) outreach, (2) seed money for new ministries or special one-time projects, and (3) capital improvements and major repairs. The application and additional information can by clicking the button below.

Death in the Diocesan Family

It is with sadness that we tell you of the death of the Rev. Carol Jablonski on Monday, June 19. Carol+ was our interim rector just a few years ago and helped lead us in the early days of the pandemic. Please keep in your prayers Carol's loved ones, as well as our parish family and pray for the repose of her soul.

“Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.”

Worship & Adult Formation

Starting June 18, all worship will be in the Parish Hall. Our weekend services will all take place on Sundays, at 8 a.m. (Rite I), 10 a.m. (Rite II with Choir), and 5 p.m. The Sunday 5 p.m. Eucharist will be an opportunity to experience new and creative liturgies. Click the button below to learn more about our Sunday Summer Evening liturgical series.

Sunday Summer Evening Schedule at St. James

Join us for one of our Sunday Summer Evenings at St. James. This special summer liturgical series will explore the breadth of Anglican worship in unique and creative ways. On June 25 at 5 p.m., we will use the New Zealand Prayer Book with its evocative and fresh language, influenced by the indigenous people there like the Maori and Pakeha.

Pray Like It's 1776 on Sunday, July 2 at 5 p.m. Did you know the founding of the United States and the founding of The Episcopal Church are inextricably linked? To celebrate Independence Day, considered a Major Feast of the Episcopal Church, we will be praying like our forefathers and mothers did in the wake of the Revolutionary War, with the first American Prayer Book of 1789. Feel free to dress in period costume! Tricorn hats welcome. Historic copies of the Episcopal prayer book from the 1800s will be on display as well.

There will be no Adult Formation during the summer months and Nave repair.

The Wednesday Healing Eucharist and Monday Morning Prayer will continue during the Nave project in the Parish Hall at regularly scheduled times.

JOIN THE SUMMER CHOIR AT ST. JAMES

Summer is here and the St. James Choir sings for Sunday morning services through July 23. If you are musically inclined and enjoy singing, please consider joining us for a "no-commitment" opportunity to join this vital ministry. Summer choir begins SUNDAY, JUNE 25 and goes through SUNDAY, July 23. Meet at 9:15 a.m. in the choir room for a thirty minute rehearsal of the service music and anthems, then sing the 10 a.m. service with us. We will provide music and vestments! For additional information, contact Director of Music Brad Gee at 694-6925 or email Brad.

Gluten free wafers are available during communion for those with celiac disease or medical issues. You may request this gluten free option at communion from the priest.

Ministry & Fellowship

Kick off the summer with a self-guided walking tour at Hopewood Historic Garden at the home of St. James parishioners, Victoria & Dennis Flanagan in Flat Rock on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24 from 9-2 each day. Experience an explosion of daylilies, native rhododendron and perennials in bloom on their 6-acre garden. Tour the kitchen garden, formal boxwood garden, and shade garden containing the largest Japanese Maple in the Carolinas. Additionally, info on the NC State Extension Master Gardener program will be available so come with gardening questions. This is a casual event so bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes. Bring your camera and the whole family! Dogs welcome. For more information, call or text Victoria at 828-606-5020. Hopewood Historic Garden, 365 Sherwood Drive S., Flat Rock.

The prayer shawl knitting group will meet on Tuesday, June 27 at 1 p.m. in the St. James Room. Bring a lunch and come at 12:30 for a bit of fellowship before we begin. All are welcome! If you have any questions, please email Laurie.

Name Tags have moved to the reception area. Name tags play an important role in helping people make connections. Whether you are a long-time member, visitor, or newcomer, please wear yours even if you attend a smaller service. Stick-on name tags for visitors are also available. If you would like a new permanent or replacement tag, complete the request form on the podium. When leaving the parish hall you can find a bowl in which to drop your tag in two places: at the entrance to the hallway leading to the Trinity Room and south entrance and in the reception area, across from the name tag boxes.

Yoga classes will meet all Wednesdays in June. We will not meet in July but will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 9. We are offering two classes: Focused 45 at 9:30 and Chair Yoga at 10:30. Participants need to have arrived 10 minutes early and be ready to begin promptly. Contact the instructor, Dianne Hunter, for any questions.Contact the instructor, Dianne Hunter, for any questions.
