Saint Therese Food Pantry shares more than food
It’s the time of year when many people gather with family and eat all kinds of delicious foods. But perhaps this year more than ever, due to record-high inflation levels, putting that food on the table is incredibly hard for some local families.

Community Harvest Food Bank’s Helping Hands Saturday food distribution has increased dramatically over the last several months, serving approximately 1,100 families each week – some of whom arrive by 4 a.m. just to get one of the first spots in line.

There’s also more demand at the smaller food pantries. For example, at Saint Therese Catholic Church, the food pantry volunteers are seeing an increase of about 30%...

Is Fort Wayne really the most affordable city?: Housing trends and resources for parents, children, and vulnerable populations
Free Prenatal & Infant Care Webinar
Thursday, December 1, 2022
10:00am-11:30am
Affordable, quality housing is essential for personal, family, and community health and wellness. Fort Wayne is often ranked as one of the most affordable cities to live in, but with rising costs and fewer housing options, many people are struggling—including parents and children. Join the St. Joe Foundation for a conversation with local agencies and experts on local housing trends, the impact of not having access to affordable housing, and the resources available to help, especially women and young families. This webinar is an opportunity for local agencies, care providers, and those within the Prenatal & Infant Care Network to learn more about housing and help their clients better understand their circumstances and feel empowered. Speakers include:

Denita Washington (pictured) is the director of programs for the Fort Wayne Housing Authority. Denita will share resources and practical steps for what to do in a time of need.

Erin Norton, R.N., B.S.N., M.B.A., will share recent data and Allen County Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) recommendations related to maternal and fetal health, and will help demonstrate why stable housing is critical for young mothers and infants.

Rachel Blakeman, J.D., will discuss housing trends, provide context for why so many people are struggling, and address whether Fort Wayne is truly an affordable city.

Stasia Roth is the founder and executive director of A Mother’s Hope. Stasia will share how the lack of available, affordable housing impacts her work and her clients, pregnant women needing housing.

Jackie Martinez is the Programs Director at Healthier Moms and Babies. Jackie will discuss helping families identify their specific needs and how to help them fill those gaps with relevant support and resources.

Q: What do you enjoy most about serving on the St. Joe Foundation Board?

This board is incredibly committed to funding programs and services in the impact areas of prenatal and infant care, nutrition and food insecurity, access to quality affordable healthcare, refugees and immigrants, and partners in the spirit. While we take those areas seriously, we have given ourselves a fairly broad lane in which to operate. In other words, these impact areas provide clarity not constraint in supporting needed services for our most vulnerable community members. We are very intentional in selecting our grantees and programs. It is an honor to see the amazing work happening locally.

ReThinking Health advocacy
with HealthVisions Midwest of Fort Wayne
The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation recently sponsored the ReThinking Health advocacy event presented by non-profit partner HealthVisions Midwest of Fort Wayne.

The keynote address was presented by Viva Combs Thorsen, PhD, a Fort Wayne native who works for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to strengthen HIV prevention programs for girls and young women in Africa and around the world. Combs Thorsen shared her moving and deeply personal story of health inequity growing up in a single parent household with no steady income. She relayed how her support systems, such as family, church, schools, social groups and more, were critical to overcoming the barriers to achieving health equity...
