On this “Day of Ashes” marking the start of Lent, the presider blesses the ashes and administers them on the foreheads of the congregation while saying: “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” This tradition signals to God creating us from dust, marks our desire for continued conversion to Christ, and reminds us that our eternal home is in Heaven--thus we strive not for things of this world but rather our eternal home. It also hearkens back to the Old Testament practices by the Israelites as an outward sign of repentance. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but it’s always a great way to start Lent by worshipping the Lord and receiving Christ in the Eucharist! | |

In 1921, Maria Kowaska left home and traveled to Krakow to become a nun. Various convents rejected her because she had only three years of schooling and had no money to purchase her habit and contribute to the convent. After a year of working, she was accepted to the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and took the name of Faustina. Life was not easy for Sr. Faustina–she endured ridicule by her fellow nuns. However, her spiritual life changed dramatically when our Lord Jesus Himself started appearing and speaking to her. He named her “His Secretary” and told her to write down everything. She continued to receive words from Our Lord that were recorded in her diary. Sister Faustina was diagnosed with “Consumption” (likely Tuberculosis) and for years steadily grew sicker while continuing her diary recording. Sister Faustina died in 1938.
Upon the election of Pope Saint John Paul II, the diary was presented to the Holy See and the Divine Mercy devotion were declared authentic and “in keeping with Church Teaching.” In 2000, Pope Saint John Paul II declared Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska a Saint and began strongly promoting the Divine Mercy message and devotion.
St. Faustina Kowalska, pray for us! Pope St. John Paul II, pray for us!
