World Mission Sunday 2018
This weekend, October 20/21 we celebrate
World Mission Sunday,
and we welcome
Fr. Dawit Moroda
from the Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte, Ethiopia. The diocese of Nekemte is foundin North West Ethiopia. It covers almost 1,133.5 sq. miles.
Our second collection this weekend will be to support Catholic Missionaries serving God in 1,108 Mission Dioceses throughout the globe.
Please be generous!
In response to Pope Francis' call for an Extraordinary Month of Mission to be celebrated in October, 2019,
Archbishop Charles Chaput has approved an Extraordinary Year of Mission in the Archdiocese.
This will begin with
World Mission Sunday on October 21, 2018
and lead up to the international Extraordinary Mission Month.
In an effort to reawaken the call to be Missionary, the Pontifical Mission Societies has initiated a "Mission Corner" in bulletins throughout the Archdiocese. Look here regularly for more on who we are, what we do, Missionaries we encounter in Philadelphia, and ways that you can fulfill your baptismal promise to be Missionary.
- Pray one Hail Mary each day for a Missionary.
- Save a $1 week to help the needs of a family living in a Mission land. This is important as most families live on $2 a week.
- Learn more about the Missions and the people they serve who are supported by the Societies to tell others.

SJV Scholars Spotlight
Nwai Alfa, sophomore, West Catholic
Preparatory High School
West Catholic has changed to a block schedule this year, with 90 minutes classes daily in English, math, and science, and other courses rotate, allowing the school to offer more electives, including classes like AP Computer Science and architectural drafting. Nwai likes the schedule because it helps him manage his time better and he enjoys having more time in math, science, and engineering classes. His favorite class this year is Honors Biology.
Nwai is involved in several activities, including yearbook, the West chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, track, and cross country. Outside of school, Nwai is participating in Career OneStop, a program that prepares high school students for summer jobs.
The SJV Scholars Program is making a difference in the lives of deserving students and their families. You can show your support by making a pledge at www.sjvscholars.com.

On June 8, 1966, His Eminence, John Cardinal Krol, Archbishop of Philadelphia, issued the decree establishing the
parish of Saint Martha in the Far Northeast section of Philadelphia. He had decided that the surrounding parishes of Our Lady of Calvary, St. Anselm and Christ the King were not sufficient to supply the needs of the burgeoning Catholic population which flooded new housing developments. The Rev. George J. Dougherty, associate pastor of Saint Ambrose Parish, was chosen first pastor, in charge of the care of 900 families. The first parish Mass and first baptisms were celebrated in the lower church of Saint Anselm's on June 19. On October 23, Mass began to be celebrated in the auditorium of Archbishop Ryan High School as it would be until December of 1967, when on Christmas Eve the First Mass in the new Saint Martha Church was celebrated.
Bells that were originally located in the tower of Saint Ludwig Parish since 1907, became part of Saint Martha when St. Ludwig closed. They were rededicated in 1978 as part of the new bell tower constructed on the parish grounds. Stained glass windows, made in Innsbruck Germany, and the Stations of the Cross, also part of St. Ludwig's Church, were installed in 1980, along with a beautiful old pipe organ from Corpus Christi parish when it closed.
During the summer of 2006, because of a generous response to a capital campaign, the parish was finally able to transform the Church from a "temporary church" (as they were built in the 1960s) into a permanent, beautiful temple of the Lord. A permanent marble altar and ambo were made possible by a generous gift. The parish looks forward to the future with confidence and hope and to continue to grow as a people who are as kind and hospitable as our patroness, Martha, the friend of Jesus.
You can read more about Saint Martha Parish and their history on the parish
website.

October 21, 2018 - Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners,
This Sunday, October 21, is World Mission Sunday. It is a special day set apart throughout the Catholic Church to concentrate on the Church's Missionary work around the world. Mission Sunday helps us to reflect on how the Church is still making every effort to preach the Gospel of Jesus to every land. Mission Sunday also helps us to realize how fortunate we are to have received the gift of our Catholic Faith and to be able to practice that Faith in freedom. We pray for all those missionaries who take the Word of God to people in every land.
This year we are fortunate in having Father Dawit Moroda, a diocesan priest from North West Ethiopia, come to our parish to speak at all of our Masses. Father Dawit will share with us the missionary work that takes place throughout his diocese of Nekemte. We are delighted to have Father Dawit with us.
Here are a few facts about the diocese of Nekemte. The diocese is located in North West Ethiopia and covers almost 1,133.5 square miles. The priests and sisters there serve about 7.8 million people in the area where life depends on backward agriculture, rain and animal products. There are 93 Catholic Churches and prayer houses, 40 priests, 52 women religious and 105 pastoral agents serving in various activities.
The regular work of the church consists of spreading the good news, administration of the sacraments, spiritual direction, faith formation, family counseling and prayer services.
The church also provides social services, education and programs that address health care, women empowerment, gender equality, justice and peace and construction of houses for the poor.
Also included in the holistic activity of the Church are protecting the environment and relief service for refugees, providing clean drinking water facilities and education programs about prevention of HIV/Aids. These are just some of the services which the church is giving. All these works are carried out entirely by the good will and support of their collaborators and partners both from abroad and inside the country.
Please note that the annual Mission Collection will be taken up this weekend of October 20 and 21, as the second collection at all the Masses. On behalf of all the missionaries whom you will assist through your contributions and all those who will hear the Christian message through the voices of those countless missionaries, we thank you for your generosity.
Have a good week ahead. God bless you all.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Msgr. Donald E. Leighton, Pastor

Statement of Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
On the Death of Most Reverend Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw
I was saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Bishop Joseph Cistone of the Diocese of Saginaw earlier today.
Bishop Cistone was a native Philadelphian. Our local Church, which he served for many years as a faithful priest and auxiliary bishop, was always close to his heart. I am grateful for the opportunities I had to spend time in conversation with him during his trips home and at the regular gatherings of bishops from across the country each year.
Bishop Cistone's love for his vocation was evident throughout his 34 years of priesthood in Philadelphia. During that time, he worked diligently to promote vocations and advance the mission of the Church through service in the Chancery. At the same time, he remained committed to providing pastoral care to souls throughout the Archdiocese at the many parishes where he resided. He carried his joy for the priesthood as well as his administrative experience with him when he was named the Bishop of Saginaw in 2009.
As all of us here in Philadelphia mourn the loss of Bishop Cistone, I extend the prayerful condolences of the Church in Philadelphia to his family and many friends as well as the priests, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Saginaw.
May God grant Bishop Cistone the gift of eternal life, and give peace and consolation to all those who loved, admired, and respected him.
