Prayer Vigil

Have Mercy on Us, O Lord:
A Prayer Vigil of Reparation and Petition

All Catholics of the greater Philadelphia area are invited to an evening of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament to ask for His mercy upon His Church in this moment of profound crisis. We come to make reparation for our own sins and those of our bishops and priests. We come also in confident hope that from Christ's superabounding mercy will come the purification, healing and restoration of holiness for which we long.  Individuals, p arishes and communities are invited to come and make their own Holy Hours throughout the evening.

Cathedral Ambassadors provide a personal presence in the Basilica and most importantly they put a face on the Church. Cathedral Ambassadors are assigned 4 hour shifts. The schedule is flexible with assignments of one day or more a month. Training and materials are provided to support this evangelization ministry.

For more information and to become a Cathedral Ambassador, please contact Martha Ortiz, the coordinator of the Cathedral Ambassadors, at cathedral.ambassadors@gmail.com. The next orientation is scheduled for early September 2018.

About the Masthead

St. Patrick Parish in Kennett Square, PA is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Southern Chester County. In 1869, the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware was created out of the territory that had formerly been part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Until that year, a priest had come from Delaware to say Mass at the Catholic Mission in Kennett Square. It was decided that southern Chester County, then a very rural and remote part of the Archdiocese, should have its own parish.

On Christmas Day in 1869, the parish of St. Patrick was created in Kennett Square. It encompassed all of southern Chester County south of West Chester. Construction of a church began immediately, and within a short time a small wooden church was blessed. This Church building measured sixty feet in length and thirty-five feet in width. Archbishop Wood, the fifth bishop of Philadelphia, dedicated the Church in 1872.

For almost forty years this church was the setting for the celebration of Sunday Masses, baptisms, weddings, and funerals of the Catholic community. In 1906, ground was broken for a larger (current) Church and one year later, a cornerstone was laid for the Church and the new St. Patrick's was dedicated. Its building is of granite with limestone trim, featuring a bell-tower at the corner, having a seating capacity of 400 and beautiful stained-glass windows from Germany.

For much of the time, southern Chester County remained mostly rural. It was only in the past 30 years that the influx of new residents and businesses has taken place. In the 1990's, the pace of change accelerated and it continues to this day.

Today, the parish is the home to more than 1500 registered households comprising nearly 4,600 individuals and continues to proclaim Jesus Christ and His Good News with the same zeal that has characterized St. Patrick's Parish for the last 150 years.

Pastor's Message

September 2, 2018 - Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

The last couple of weeks have, indeed, been painfully tumultuous for all of our Church members. The "Fall from Grace" of Cardinal McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington, was shocking enough. After that we had the release of the Grand Jury Report on clergy sexual abuse of children in six dioceses of Pennsylvania over the last seventy years. Then, last Sunday, the release of a six page letter written by Archbishop Viganò, the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, claiming that the Vatican was aware of the offenses of Cardinal McCarrick and did nothing about it. Archbishop Viganò then goes on to suggest that Pope Francis should resign. Just what is going on with our Church?

It's like a tsunami or an earthquake. All of these events have shocked and saddened all the members of our Church. I'm sure that, for many Catholics, their Faith in the Church has been severely shaken. However, it's important for all of us to keep in mind what our Faith is about. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, our Faith is about Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, that He lived and died and rose again victoriously and that now Jesus shares His risen life with all of us as we walk the road of life. And it is Jesus, Himself, Who calls us to share in the fullness of His risen life in the Kingdom.

We also need to keep in mind that it is Jesus Who established our Church on the rock of Peter and the other apostles. He said that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church. With all that has come to light over the past few weeks, it might seem that the gates of hell are prevailing. However, Jesus promised us that He would be with us all days, even until the end of times. Jesus is not deserting us now and will make sure that our Church will survive, cleansed and purified.

Pope Francis has acknowledged that sins and crimes have been committed against God's children by those who should have been protecting them. Pope Francis has said that our leaders have betrayed their trust and has begged for forgiveness from all those who have been offended. Pope Francis has also given us his word that this scourge will be eliminated from our Church.

In the meantime we pray for all those who have been painfully wounded by these terrible offenses. May the Lord heal them and restore them to the fullness of peace and health. Over the last fifteen years, our own diocese has initiated many programs that are aimed at guaranteeing that our children are protected from all harm. All those in our parishes who have anything to do with children, either in school or at Church, go through a regular Safe Environment training. Our Church is doing and will continue to do everything possible for the ongoing welfare of our children.

There is an old saying that states that the Church is always in need of reform. Whereas we might not have known about all of these horrible problems in the past, everyone is aware of them now. With Faith in Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our Church will rise from the darkness of selfishness and sin and continue to follow Jesus, the light of the world, into a much healthier, vibrant Church in the future.

Have a good week ahead. God bless you all!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Msgr. Donald E. Leighton, Pastor

"Friends, in light of the recent scandals, I know many people are wondering whether they should remain in the Catholic Church. And I totally get that; the outrage is warranted. But in this time of crisis, I beg you not to flee, but to fight--not violently, with the weapons of the world, but with the weapons of the Spirit. We need you."
