Saint John Vianney Happenings - September 23, 2017

Altar Servers

Altar Server Training

We are excited to announce that there are a number of new children willing to participate as altar servers!

Claudia Baldassano and Mary Anne Monroe, DRE, will train new servers on Saturday, September 30th, from 9:30-11:00 AM.

This training session will be ideal for brand new altar servers. It will also suit former altar servers who need a refresher. The children will become familiar with the vessels and vestments used in liturgy, the Parts of the Mass, as well as the "mechanics" of altar serving.

If your child would like to begin participating in this important ministry, or if your child is in need of more practice, then bring your child to our Altar Server Training Event on Saturday, September 30th.

About the Masthead

Sunday, December 14, 1941, the formal Opening Mass of the St. Raymond of Penafort Parish, in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, would be held in a barn. There was no heat in the barn. There were no pews or seats of any kind, but the 300 dedicated worshipers didn't seem to consider this a hardship as they gathered in the cold barn, with animals nearby, to celebrate Mass. They prayed for world peace and the safety of our servicemen.

By the winter of 1942-1943 the old stone barn was better equipped to protect parishioners form the rigors of cold weather. Though still a barn, the stone building gradually came a church, a House of the Lord.

Construction of a new church began in July of 1948 as the 700 families of St. Raymond had outgrown the Barn. In February of 1949 the Church was dedicated.

Since the 1960s, there has been many changes in the parish as the City of Philadelphia experienced a large population shift to the suburbs. The Mount Airy community has become a diverse cross-section of economic and ethnic families.

God has blessed St. Raymond Parish and while the City continues to change, St. Raymond remains a growing beacon of light in Mount Airy. Check out this YouTube video and see the dynamic and energetic parish that is St. Raymond of Penafort.

Pastor's Message

September 24, 2017 -  Twenty-fifth Sunday  in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

Now that the new school has begun, our Religious Education Program for the children is back in full swing. There are approximately 123 children registered for grades one through seven. The program is run on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 P.M. until 5:15 P.M.

On Wednesday afternoon, we are using our parish house for grades two, four, five, six and seven. This works out very well and the children feel very special in their individual classrooms. Grades one and three are being taught in the Church hall with plenty of room for all the students. The room dividers separate each class and keep the sound level down.

Mrs. Mary Anne Monroe, our Director of Religious Education, has a wonderful faculty for the children; ten of our parishioners are both teachers and aides:

1st Grade- Kathy Johns
2nd Grade- Beth Mascio (Jim Tornetta, aide)
3rd Grade- Genna Rufo Smyth (Gretchen Sprafke, aide)
4th Grade- Ellen Giangiordano
5th Grade- Ellen Delea
6th Grade- Claudia Baldassano
7th Grade- Susan Ballas
8th Grade- Michele Hanson

New this year, we will be offering a Sunday Program called "The Wild Goose is Loose" for confirmed 7th & 8th graders. This program involves a DVD segment and opportunity for reflection designed to help confirmed Catholics deepen their relationship with the Holy Spirit. This class will meet every first and third Sunday of the month in the Parish House from 11:35 AM - 12:35 PM.

We are grateful to all those involved in this program and we look forward to a wonderful educational experience in our Catholic Faith for all of our children.

Have a good week ahead. God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Msgr. Donald E. Leighton, Pastor

Did You Know?

An old Cherokee was teaching his young grandson one of life's most important lessons. He told the young boy the following parable:

"There is a fight going on inside each of us. It is a terrible fight between two wolves," he said.

"One wolf is evil. He is anger, rage, envy, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The second wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, empathy, truth, compassion, and faith."

The grandson thought about this for a moment. Then he asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win this fight?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
