FEEDING BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT

Dear Friends,

As we begin a new fiscal year, we do so with both determination and deep concern. The sweeping cuts in federal programs like SNAP part of what has been dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill” threaten to dismantle vital services that have long helped lift individuals and families out of poverty. We now face a future that is more uncertain than ever, and the question we ask ourselves is: how do we continue to serve all those who turn to us for help?

In the face of these challenges, we hold fast to something powerful-HOPE. Hope is not passive. It is the belief in a better future, the courage to face adversity, and the strength to keep moving forward.

At Bread & Life, we have prepared for times like these. Just as we did during the pandemic, we are ready to meet the moment with compassion, dignity, and resilience. Whether it is a warm meal, a bag of groceries, a clean pair of socks, a helpful referral, or a kind word, we will be here. Even as we confront a staggering $900,000 deficit in government funding, we will leave no stone unturned in our advocacy for increased support, ensuring that no guest is ever turned away.

This month, we are proud to highlight exciting partnerships with Hospital for Special Surgery, Rethink Food, and the New York Liberty, who are helping us promote healthy living through nutritious food, fitness, and community engagement. WNBA superstar Breanna Stewart generously joined us to distribute food and meet with our guests, reminding us of all the power of connection.

We also take a moment to honor Mabel Labron, a cherished member of our Bread & Life family for more than 25 years. Mabel’s quiet leadership and unwavering care embody the heart of our mission. She is genuinely love in action.

Looking ahead, we are thrilled to announce our second annual Mixer4Meals on October 23, 2025, at Pando Park, where we will celebrate two extraordinary honorees: Mike Staub of TEI Elevators and Andrea Berrigan of AB Energy Partners. Their commitment to supporting emergency food programs has made a real difference. Please save the date and consider joining us for what promises to be an inspiring evening. More details and ways to get involved will follow soon.

Thank you for standing with us. My hope for you this summer is simple: choose hope, every day. Because with hope, anything is possible.

With Gratitude,

Sr. Caroline Tweedy, RSM

Executive Director

For over 25 years, Mabel Labron has been a steadfast presence at Bread & Life, arriving in the early morning hours and staying until the last task in the pantry kitchen is complete. Her work ethic, quiet leadership, and deep compassion make her an integral part of our mission.

Mabel is not only a dedicated team member—she’s a constant source of care and support for our guests, always looking out for those in need. Her daily actions reflect the very heart of Bread & Life: service, dignity, and love in action.

A Slam Dunk for Community Wellness

On Thursday, July 10th, 2025, we were proud to host the Eat & Move Better wellness event right outside our Brooklyn facilities, thanks to an incredible partnership with NY Liberty, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), and Rethink Food.

A special thank you to WNBA star Breanna Stewart, who generously spent her day off with us—distributing meals, connecting with our guests, and signing autographs with warmth and enthusiasm. Together, we shared fresh food, vital resources, and a powerful message about community wellness. It was a beautiful reminder that meaningful impact happens when we come together—on and off the court.

Honoring the Legacy of

Jeremy Kirkland

We remember Jeremy Kirkland, a beloved friend of St. John’s Bread & Life and a shining example of compassion in action. As a Market Leader at Bank of America, Jeremy dedicated himself not only to his team and clients in Brooklyn but also to our mission—volunteering his time, raising funds, and inspiring colleagues to serve. Known for his warm smile, sharp wit, and unwavering commitment to dignity, access, and equity, he truly believed that “together, we have the power to make a lasting impact.” While Jeremy

passed away on May 16, 2025, his spirit endures in every meal served, every neighbor supported, and every volunteer motivated by his example. In his honor, donations made in his name will directly support our emergency food programs, carrying forward his legacy of service and kindness.

Liberty's Breanna Stewart says days off much needed before next week's All-Star break - NY Post July 10 2025

The Liberty’s Breanna Stewart poses with a fan during a community event in Brooklyn on July 10, 2025. Bridget Reilly

Breanna Stewart recently shared that the New York Liberty’s rare days off ahead of the All‑Star break were a vital moment of rest amid a demanding 2025 season schedule. With the Liberty sitting at 13‑6 and dealing with injuries to key players like Jonquel Jones and Isabelle Harrison, Stewart emphasized the importance of downtime before returning to a packed stretch of games. In addition to recharging, she used one of those breaks to join St. John’s Bread & Life in Brooklyn—handing out meals, wellness goods, and signing autographs for local residents.
