Deans' Note | August 7, 2022
As many of you know, the Bishops of the Anglican Communion meet every 10 years in Canterbury England for the Lambeth Conference. The meeting was delayed from 2020 because of COVID, but they are meeting now through the 8th of August. Much media attention has focused on the potential for controversy and infighting among bishops from conservative provinces versus those from liberal ones concerning issues of human sexuality and same-sex marriage. Despite these predictions, the conference has been infused by the work of the Holy Spirit. Everyone has not suddenly changed their minds, and differences have not been put aside, but there is a new willingness to walk alongside one another in the midst of differences, to observe our Lord’s invitation in John’s Gospel to love one another as Jesus loves us. That is the ground of relationship, and because it is, bishops, dioceses, and provinces can work together to advance the work of the kingdom on issues like the climate crisis, and global justice.

Deans' Last Days
The Deans' last regular Sunday, is August 28, 2022.
They begin vacation, sabbatical and study from September 2022 through January 2023.
They will return for one final Sunday, November 20, the Feast of Christ the King.

Fall Choir Announcement
After long pandemic hiatus, this coming October will mark the return to our full choir at St. John’s Cathedral! Much has changed since the full choir last sang on in March of 2020. We’ve done our best to carefully move through many different iterations of Covid protocols: first recording alone from home, then pre-recording musical elements in the service and editing into the service, to small quartets of staff singers masked and socially distanced, to larger groups of staff musicians. The choir will be comprised of both professional and talented volunteer musicians. Potential new and returning members of the choir are invited to contact Christopher Gravis to schedule an audition cgravis@stjohnsla.org. Strong musical skills and choral experience are required. Thank you to your unwavering support over these very challenging few years. We look forward to once again offering beautiful music to the glory of God.

Toiletry Drive
Starts Sunday, August 7, 2022
Starting this Sunday we will be accepting toiletry donations for our Food Pantry guests. Bring a bar of soap, toothpaste, or any other types of toiletries and drop it in our basket located at the entrance of the cathedral.

Parishioners are always welcome to speak with these individuals on Sunday morning; they assist in making sure our questions, comments, or concerns are heard.

We are seeking readers for Evening Prayer as the Deans transition to retirement. Tuesday has been traditionally led by Mr. Walter Killmer and our clergy, Live from Clergy House. If you are a member of the congregation and would like to be considered as we discern more leaders for this important ministry, please contact the parish office. Assistance available for those new to leading the service.

The Cathedral Choral Academy
Now Enrolling!
The Cathedral Choral Academy provides quality music education to girls and boys ages 7 - 14, regardless of prior musical experience. All children receive a full scholarship. This program meets every Thursday from 5 - 7pm (dinner included!) beginning September 8, 2022, and includes multiple performance opportunities throughout the year.
