Weekly News Update

The Season of Advent arrives on Sunday, 3 December as we light the first candle. This time of waiting, anticipation, preparation and hope will be filled with opportunities to gather for prayer and reflection.

Later that day at 5pm on 3 Dec., Lessons and Carols will be sung by the St. John’s Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Dr. Christopher Gravis and accompanied by Dr. Zachery Neufeld.

On Advent II we will celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe during the 10am Sunday service on 10 Dec., followed by a festive Latin feast.

During the following week, on Dec. 13 in the evening at 7pm, The Guibord Center will host an Interfaith Program of Grief and Spiritual Solidarity in response to the war in Israel and Palestine. As a house of prayer for all people, St. John’s Cathedral is honored to host this special gathering. Please join us.

After Sunday services on Dec. 17th, the Vestry of St. John’s will meet at noon for our monthly business meeting. This is an open meeting; you are most welcome. Sometime that weekend, it is my hope that we can green our Cathedral for Christmas. If you are interested in helping, please let us know. Stay tuned for more information.

On Advent IV, which is also Christmas Eve, there will be a combined 9am service in the morning, followed by a 7pm candlelight service, and a festive 10:30pm Christmas Eve service with the Bishop of Los Angeles, The Rt. Rev. John H. Taylor, who will preside and preach late night. Then on Christmas Day, there will be a joyful service at 10am.

2023 will draw to a close on Sunday, 31 Dec. with Sunday services at 8am and 10am – at our regular times.

We look forward to seeing you throughout the month of December as we gather in hope once again. May you experience God’s love and peace this Season.

Blessings and love,

Anne+

Planning Ahead...

Canon Earl Mounger has begun planning for our celebration of African American History Month (January 14 through February 11). If you are interested in joining the planning committee please speak with the Rev. Anne Sawyer or Deacon Margaret McCauley.

The Gathering, A Space for Asian Pacific American Spirituality, invites you to prepare your heart for the Christmas season with its annual Advent service. This year, the celebration will be held at St. John's Cathedral, on Sunday, December 17 at 5 pm. All are welcome at the table as we weave together Asian American Pacific Islander identity and Christian joy. Advent music will be offered by musicians from Laós Chamber Music. Refreshments and fellowship will follow.

St. Paul’s Commons, Echo Park, will host an artist’s reception honoring the Rev. Canon Warner R. Traynham, retired rector of St. John’s, on Saturday, December 9 from 4-6 pm. The reception will feature an exhibit of Canon Traynham’s paintings that he has donated for sale to benefit the diocesan One Body & One Spirit Annual Appeal. The exhibit is titled “Abstracts in Action.” St. Paul’s Commons is located at 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles. All are welcome

If you brought in a picture of a loved-one for our November "ofrenda" now is the time to retrieve it from the altar in the baptistry.

A regular meeting of the St. John’s Cathedral Vestry will take place on Sunday December 17th noon in the Parish Office.
