A Message from the Senior Warden, Mr. Erik Knutzen

In the absence of a Dean, the Senior Warden has to take on, according to our by-laws, the “secular duties of the Rector/Dean." Please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone or email during this period. Our beloved Deacon, Margaret McCauley has agreed to be the contact for your pastoral concerns.

The Vestry and I hope to begin the process of choosing a new Dean as soon as possible. In the meantime let’s all pray for the people of St. John’s and give thanks for the work of our current clergy and staff.

Welcome to African American History Month | by Canon Earl Mounger

Welcome to St. John’s Celebration of African American History Month, we are celebrating our history because Absalom Jones who resisted segregation when he and other Blacks were asked to sit in a segregated section of his church after the White members became uncomfortable with the growing number of Blacks in the congregation of the church. He along with Richard Allen left that church and he eventually became the first African American priest in the Episcopal Church. We are also celebrating this month because Carter G. Woodson is known as the father of Black History. He inaugurated Negro History Week because he was an educator who knew the importance of persons knowing their history. He wanted history to be taught so that no one’s history is left out. His vision was to honor our ancestors, celebrate Black Culture, and acknowledge the pain and suffering we continue to endure. That week of celebration eventually became Black History Month in 1970.

The cathedral will celebrate an official leave taking from the congregation with Fr. Mark Kowalewski and Fr. Dan Ade this Sunday, February 5th during and after Mass. Gifts will be given and thanksgivings shared. Please join us for this special day in the life of the congregation as we celebrate the ongoing work of our parish in the heart of Los Angeles.

Vestry members are partners with clergy, encouraging the growth of community and the establishment of common ground in the spiritual life of the congregation. Parishioners are always welcome to speak with these individuals on Sunday morning; they assist in making sure our questions, comments, or concerns are heard.

The Choral Academy Open Enrollment

The Choral Academy is a great music program for all children ages 7-14. This program meets every Thursday from 4 - 6 pm (dinner included!) until June 1, 2023 and it includes multiple performance opportunities throughout the year. Enroll now, reach out to Mr. Salts at ssalts@stjohnsla.org .

Bloy House Lay Formation Program February and March Class information

Bloy House is currently charting a new course in its education services for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. We are developing a robust lay formation program to help lay leaders throughout the diocese discern their ministry, grow their faith, and explore minis- try opportunities.
