Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge's Note

So much good is happening at St. John’s Cathedral this weekend and beyond.

On Saturday February 10th at 11am, The Program Group on Black Ministries and the H. Belfield Hannibal chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians will host a service at St. John’s Cathedral in honor of Absalom Jones, the first Black priest in The Episcopal Church. The Rev. Joseph Oloimooja will be the preacher. A Mardi Gras-themed lunch featuring peach cobbler will follow.

Then on Sunday, we will welcome Andre Henry, an award-winning songwriter, musician and author, as a special guest preacher. His book, All the White Friends I Couldn’t Keep has been a book study for us during the month of Black History at St. John’s.

After the 10am service, we will gather in the parish hall for a celebratory reception, and

the Annual Meeting, at which time we will elect three new members to the Vestry, approve a budget for this year, and hear the latest update on the housing development underway. The Annual Meeting was postponed last week because of the weather. While we are aware it’s Super Bowl Sunday, we promise to have everyone home long before the game starts.

Next week for Shrove Tuesday on February 13th, please join us on the steps of the Cathedral for live New Orleans jazz by The Bayou Bump, led by Barbara Laronga. Music will begin at 6:00pm. We will enjoy a savory light meal, followed by the burning of palm branches in preparation for Ash Wednesday.

On Ash Wednesday, February 14th, we will offer a simple 7am prayer service (without homily), a 12:10pm Holy Eucharist with homily (no music), and an evening Holy Eucharist at 7pm with both music and a homily.

As we move through a time of busyness into the holy season of Lent, allow yourselves to

feel the rhythm of life through prayer, fasting, repentance, reading and meditating on God’s Word, as we seek reconciliation in our lives and in the world. We hope to see you.

Love and blessings,

Anne+

Participants have an opportunity to ask questions and share responses in an open, warm, and welcoming environment. Please sign up with The Rev. Mel Soriano.

Preparation for Baptism

Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body the Church. Are you interested in baptism, for yourself or for your children? A Message from Bob Bowen...

A series of workshops is planned for persons of the Saint John’s community who are interested in the relationship between creativity and religion…primarily at our Cathedral. Depending on the agreed upon specific focus of those persons who come to the first session, we will construct a plan which will include: objectives, frequency of meeting and desired outcomes.

Here is an overview which might be helpful to interested parishioners:

“God is a process at work in the universe, within and among us, that makes for the fulfillment of our human potential.” The author is Rabbi Dennis C. Sasso. We will apply this and other

viewpoints to our creative adventure.

If you are interested, please contact the Cathedral office. I look forward to our initial gathering and beyond.
