A Note from the Senior Warden | February 26, 2023

The vestry appointed Heather Ward to serve a one year term to fill a vacancy and elected Avie Kimbell to be our new junior warden. Thanks to both for their service to St. John’s and thanks to Michael Tracy who just completed his term.

We look forward to the arrival of our interim Dean-in-charge, the Rev. Anne Sawyer who will be with us on Sunday the 19th if not sooner. Mo. Anne brings with her many years of experience as a priest, administrator and social worker.

Lastly, many thanks to our food pantry volunteers who served 78 Households and 292 people last week.

An Announcement from the Order of the Daughters of the King

The Daughters of the King, St. John's Chapter, are pleased to announce the election of their new President, Ms. Felicia Gaddis, and Vice-President, Ms. Gwen Wade. Anyone interested in learning more about DOK activities should connect with them or at their monthly meeting which is scheduled for March 19. Time TBA. The Daughters are also planning their annual Lenten Retreat on Saturday March 25, from 9am to 2pm. Quiet meditation will be accompanied by prayer (along with coffee and muffins in the morning and sandwiches in the afternoon).

Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE-LA) What prompted the inception of the Union of Black Episcopalians in the Episcopal Church in the United States? Join the St. John's Cathedral choir for a contemplative service of candlelit prayer sung on the first Sunday of the month. Followed by a time of fellowship and food.

Vestry members are partners with clergy, encouraging the growth of community and the establishment of common ground in the spiritual life of the congregation. Parishioners are always welcome to speak with these individuals on Sunday morning; they assist in making sure our questions, comments, or concerns are heard.

Community

Diocesan service commemorating Absalom Jones will be celebrated with Evensong at 4:00pm on February 26^th at Holy Faith Church, Inglewood.

Our Parish Deacon, The Rev. Margaret McCauley, will preach; the Rev. Joseph Oloimooja will preside. A soul food reception will follow the service.

Attend a service celebrating the life and ministry of the Rt. Rev. Barbara Clementine Harris, late bishop suffragan of the Diocese of Massachusetts and first woman bishop in the Anglican Communion.

The service, to be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 at the Cathedral, is sponsored by the H. Belfield Hannibal chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) and the Program Group on Black Ministry of the Diocese of Los Angeles.

The original altar quilt was done in 2010. It combines two types of African American quilts: applique and embroidery quilts. My goal then, as now, was much like that of early African American quilters, to tell our history of diversity and community here at St. John's. We come from across the country and the world. Each panel has four components to help tell your story: your place of birth, the year you became an affiliate or member, your name, and one or two activities you are or have been involved with here at St John's. I invite you to add your name to our shared community history here at St. John's. Each Sunday for the next month there will be someone at a table to assist you. You may choose from the precut colors of the rainbow and follow the instructions to add your name. The cost for each panel is $25.00. If you have moved and would like to add your name, contact the church office for information.
