Dean's Note
Dear Friends in Christ,
This Saturday we will celebrate the glorious long life of Valeria Louise McCray, who died last month on June 5, 2023 at the age of 101. As many of you may know, her children, Diane Green and Stephen McCray, shared that Mrs. McCray was a member of St. John’s Church, then Cathedral, for some 80 years. How amazing is that! I had the pleasure of taking communion and visiting with her only a short time ago. We give our heartfelt condolences to her family.
A long life gives perspective on so much over the course of time. We are reminded that while each chapter of life is significant, there have been many chapters in our own lives and the life of St. John’s Cathedral in the past, and many chapters yet to be born. At the start of a new chapter, we are given the opportunity to carry forward the best of what has been, and let go of anything that does not glorify the love of God. Identifying what to carry forward is the task ahead of all of you, good people of St. John’s during this time of transition. I am excited for you and all of us as we continue this journey together.
Mrs. McCray’s service will begin at noon with a special celebration offered by her sorority, followed by the traditional burial rite for a beloved member of our church. Please join us for the services and a reception to follow.
Blessings,
Anne Sawyer
Interim Dean & Priest-in-Charge
