Weekly News Update

A Note from the Senior Warden | March 5, 2023

As senior warden I'd like to take a moment to say how thankful I am for the ministries of Mo. Lyn and Deacon Margaret. They have both put in many hours to take care of our pastoral needs and run the services during this transition period. While we look forward to the arrival of Mo. Anne on the 19th, we would not have been able to keep our doors open were it not for Lyn and Margaret. Let us all say a prayer of thanksgiving for their ongoing role in our beloved St. John's community.

The Diaconate: A Call to Service

Sunday, March 12, 2023 following the 10 am service

The vocational deacon is one of the three distinct orders of ordained ministry (along with priests and bishops) in the Episcopal Church. All ordained clergy begin their journey as a deacon. The vocational (permanent) Deacon exercises a "special ministry of servanthood" directly under the deacon's bishop. Vocational deacons are ordained to serve all people especially those in need and to lead the people into the world to live our Baptismal Covenant. Join Deacon Margaret and explore the work of the Diaconate.

OUT OF THE DEEP — A Lenten Performance Experience

Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 8pm

Free-of-charge

The Choir of St. John’s Cathedral, in collaboration with the Pennington Dance Group, will offer a special Lenten performance on March 19 at 8.00pm. This unique experience will pair the Medieval composer Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame with contemporary Estonian minimalist Arvo Pärt’s stunning De Profundis. Performed by candlelight in the historic Romanesque architecture of St. John’s Cathedral, this performance is free-of-charge, and not to be missed. All are welcome. Reception to follow.

Vestry On-Call

Suzanne Papp

Vestry members are partners with clergy, encouraging the growth of community and the establishment of common ground in the spiritual life of the congregation. Parishioners are always welcome to speak with these individuals on Sunday morning; they assist in making sure our questions, comments, or concerns are heard.

Baptisms & Reaffirmations

Those interested in Baptisms and Reaffirmations at the Easter Vigil should contact the parish office or speak with clergy.

Lenten Quiet Morning : Architectural Meditations | St. John's Cathedral

Anyone who visits Los Angeles will find his visit incomplete who does not make a pilgrimage to St. John's Church. A few weeks after the consecration of St. John's Church in 1925, a writer spent Holy Week and Easter Day visiting the many new churches in the growing city of Los Angeles.
