Dear Friends In Christ,

Greetings! I have missed you while away at the North American Dean’s Conference and the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles Clergy Conference this past week.

Many deep thanks to Mother Lyn and Deacon Margaret for leading services and preaching. Many of you know, Deacon Margaret had surgery this week. She is home recovering, but will need to rest for a few weeks before she can return. Please pray for Margaret asking God for healing, strength, patience and peace. May she feel our love from near and far.

There are several parish announcements that I wish to share.



On Thursday May 4th, we celebrated the life of Judith Allison Kumar, a long-standing member since the 70’s. Her family attended St. John’s for decades, and her children were baptized and confirmed in our cathedral. While the burial rite is an Easter liturgy, this joy does not make human grief unchristian. The love we have for each other brings great sorrow when we part; however, nothing can separate us for the love of God in Christ.

On Saturday, St. John’s will host a beautiful service to confirm, receive and reaffirm four members of our church, along with over 25 fellow Episcopalians from churches throughout our diocese. Bishop John H. Tylor will preach, and a simply delicious reception will follow.

Mark your calendars now for every Sunday this month!

On 5/14, we will celebrate all mothers who give life, love and nurture us, in appreciation for their presence in our hearts and love.

Next, on 5/21, after our 10 am service, we will give thanks and sing praises for all the volunteers who serve faithfully on Sundays and throughout the week to make church happen with grace, and to glorify God. A special celebratory reception will be given in their honor, and there will be the chance to sign up for ministries that might be of interest to you. I hope you will join us in sharing our deep gratitude.

Then lastly this month, on 5/28, Bishop Taylor will be back with us on Pentecost as the Spirit blows through our church and into our lives, inspiring us once again to grow in faith, to proclaim the Good News of Christ, and to love each other.

Summer is around the corner. While some of our musicians will take a break after Pentecost, it is my hope that we will gather in new ways, as we kindle new relationships and old, and discern where the Spirit is leading us next. I pray you will join us.

Diocesan Confirmations

We will host a diocese-wide service of confirmation on Saturday, May 6, 2023 beginning at 10 a.m. 

Bishop Taylor will confirm candidates as presented by their home congregations at the cathedral. Interim Dean Anne Sawyer looks forward to welcoming the confirmands and their families to the service, which is offered on the first Saturday of May each year.

Vestry On-Call

Vestry members are partners with clergy, encouraging the growth of community and the establishment of common ground in the spiritual life of the congregation. Parishioners are always welcome to speak with these individuals on Sunday morning; they assist in making sure our questions, comments, or concerns are heard.

Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana

Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 7:30 pm

Christopher Gravis will conduct Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with orchestra and combined choirs at the Luckman Theatre on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles. The concert is at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 6, and will feature St. John’s Cathedral Choir member Natalie Buickians singing the soprano solo, as well as the children’s choir from All Saints’ Church in Pasadena. 

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, $5 for students with I.D., and free for current CSULA students with I.D.

Unbound: Immigrant Voices Post Detention

Thursday, May 11 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Hosted at St. Paul’s Commons in Echo Park, we will have the opportunity to hear from those who have undergone the evils found in detention centers, and learn how to best partner with them going forward. 

St. John's Cathedral Quilt

Canon Earl Mounger would like to thank those of you who have added your name to the new quilt project. He says that it is not too late to add your name. The quilt documents members of the cathedral past and present with their place of birth, the year they became a member, and their involvement in parish life. Earl still needs fifteen names to finish the second quilt. Please use the form below and turn into the parish office along with cash or check for $25 to offset production costs.
