Weekly News Update

Deans' Note | November 21, 2021

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It's hard to believe the holiday season is upon us especially after having had such a different experience last year as most of us were hunkered down and connected digitally, but not in person. Our worship this year is hybrid, providing the opportunity to connect in person or online.

Still, the lesson we learned during the pandemic is that while in person worship is ideal in many contexts, there are other times when digital services are highly appropriate. Thanksgiving Eve is one of these. Over the years many of us have braved the freeways on Thanksgiving Eve to get to St. John's -- those who travel "over the river and through the woods" have it easy compared with commuting Angelinos.

While the service we have traditionally celebrated in the choir was lovely, it was not always well attended -- in part because of the difficulty getting there. Last year, out of necessity, we had a service live from clergy house. This year we will continue that tradition but through the magic of Zoom, we will include music from our Cathedral musicians as well.

While a digital service will allow us all to have a less stressful Thanksgiving Eve, it also conveys its own meaning for this holiday. You will be able to experience worship in your own home, maybe even as you prepare for your gathering the next day. This holiday, more than others, is a celebration that takes place around the family table, giving thanks to God for the abundance we have received. Together, our prayer will sanctify this time joining us together wherever we may be, near or far, some here in Los Angeles and others who may be traveling. We will all be home together as our St. John's community.

Please know that on Thanksgiving and every day:

"We always thank God for all of you when we mention you constantly in our prayers. This is because we remember your work that comes from faith, your effort that comes from love, and your perseverance that comes from hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father."

(I Thessalonians 1:2-3)

Stewardship: Every Perfect Gift | St. John's Cathedral

For many of us the words from the hymn we call the doxology ring in our minds with the mention of the first line - praise God from whom all blessings flow; the words may be too familiar. How often do we remember that all our blessings come from the hand of God?

Trans Day of Remembrance 2021

Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 6:00 pm

Join the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles and the Lang Lang Foundation Young Piano Prodigy Scholar Carey Bryron in a music program of Remembrance and Resilience. Join us as we lift our voices in the memory of those who have fallen and had the courage to be who they are.

When: Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 6pm

Where: St. John’s Episcopal Church 514 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90007

Since 2015, Trans Chorus of Los Angeles-TCLA has made an impact in the choral world by using our unique voices to be visible, bold and proud. TCLA is the premiere all Trans-identified chorus in America. We are a Chorus of transgender, gender non-conforming, gender non-binary, gender fluid, and intersex individuals. We celebrate diversity and acceptance in appearance and vocal presentation so that others can see and feel the joy we share. Through our music we bring to everyone, awareness, understanding, power and victory for the Trans community.

Our vision is, through song and our voices, to embrace all members of the trans community and to bring awareness of the trans experience by developing understanding, caring and support in the community at large. We celebrate diversity and acceptance in appearance and vocal presentation so that others can see and feel the joy we share in our music.

"On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor their lives — and recommit to the work that remains to ensure that every transgender and gender-nonconforming person in America has the opportunity to live authentically, earn a living wage, and be treated with dignity and respect in their communities and workplaces,"

Transgender rights are human rights. To transgender and gender-nonconforming people across America and around the world: from the moment I am sworn in as president of the United States, know that my administration will see you, listen to you, and fight for not only your safety but also the dignity and justice you have been denied.
