Weekly News Update

Dean's Note

Dear Friends In Christ,

Nearly every Sunday, our Bishop, The Rt. Rev. John H. Taylor, is on the road visiting a different church community in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles to preach and celebrate with parishioners near and far. This Sunday, Bishop Taylor will be with us!

During his visit at 10am, we will baptize a little one into the household of God, commission and re-commission our Vestry, bless beautiful new green vestments given in loving memory of Louis Randall Gaines by Lurelean and Tina, and continue celebrating the Season of Creation. We hope you can join us as St. John’s community of faith, gathered in love with joyful hearts. A reception with cake and healthy fruit will follow.

Then on Thursday the 14th of September at 6:30pm, you are invited to an evening of Justice & Jazz, with the focus on environmental justice this month. The conversation will be led by Jessica Gable, Program Manager at Sunstone Strategies. Jessica is a journalist turned communications strategist who found her calling in helping communities impacted by industrial pollution fight for change and advocating for clean energy solutions. Joining her will be parishioner Richard Stauch, P.E., who is a Project Manager with Chevron for various projects including: CO2 & NOxemissions reduction. Fabulous Jazz will set the stage before and after, led by the talented Dr. Zach Neufeld and musical friends. See below for more details..

There is much to celebrate at St. John’s Cathedral, thanks to all of you. I hope to see you soon.

Much love and blessings,

Anne Sawyer

Interim Dean & Priest-in-Charge

Celebrating Our Past and Imagining Our Future Together

Dear St. John’s Cathedral Community,

You are cordially invited to a brunch and conversation on Sept 24, Oct 22, Nov 5, from 10am to 12:30pm, where we will take the opportunity to celebrate, examine, and learn from our past and the present as we look to the future of our St. John's congregation. Your input is needed to help us discern where God is guiding us during this time of transition into the future.

We will strive to respect everyone's experiences, hopes, dreams, and values without judgment. We will not devalue anyone's input but receive all contributions with grace. This will be facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Eric Law, a neutral, unbiased facilitator, experienced in bringing congregations together around a vision for the future.

Recognizing that St. Johns is made up of people with many backgrounds, gifts, and experiences, let us honor that and move forward in one spirit.

You are the threads that make up a quilt patch. It takes many patches full of rainbow colors to complete a quilt. Without you, our quilt is incomplete.

Planning Committee,

Celebrating Our Past and Imagining Our Future Together

6:30 pm

Join environmental communications strategist Jessica Gable for an evening of jazz and justice. The legacy of environmental racism has placed many of Southern California’s communities on the frontlines of fossil fuel pollution. Learn about pressing issues of oil drilling and methane leaks in our community of Los Angeles and how you can make a difference.

Belize Day is September 17th!

We invite you to join us for Belize Day on September 17th! The celebration will begin at our 10 am service with a traditional drumming performance by the Garafuna Cultural Ensemble. After the service, we will continue the festivities with a delicious and festive luncheon. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the rich and vibrant culture of Belize, and we hope you can join us for this special event.
