PASTOR'S REFLECTION

To this day, I'm still not overly thrilled about thunderstorms. But I really, really disliked them as a young child. I can still remember my mother's attempts to explain the thunder: "That's just God moving the furniture around in heaven." And the crazy thing is ... I totally believed hfer - I bought into it hook, line, and sinker. I would just sit there beside her imagining God, bigger than life, complete with full white beard and kindly look on His face, pushing, shoving and rearranging heavenly sofas, beds, refrigerators, and dining room tables.
That vivid memory came back to me Sunday night when it seemed that several thunderstorms in a row passed by. I have to admit that I was not on top of the weather, and so the series of storms took me by surprise. And they were pretty intense for a while - a few fire trucks with sirens flew back, and then there was one of those LOUD warning alerts on my phone just after I fell asleep - which, of course, caused me to wake up and listen to the thunder and lightning again - and to remember my mother telling me the story of God moving furniture around.
I find it interesting that nature disasters are often referred to, even by the insurance industry, as "acts of God." It's true that we normally have very little control over things like storms, floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. But the fact that we call them "acts of God" makes it sound as though God purposely points a finger at someone, or at a whole town or village. And that is not an idea that sets well with me - theologically, it makes no sense. Because the last thing God would ever do is to target innocent people. That's not the kind of God we believe in. God would never send hardship, destruction, death and anguish to anyone on purpose.
The truth is that "life" just happens. The "laws of nature" just happen. God never promised we would live a trouble-free life, but God DID promise He would be with us always. I don't know the reason why bad things happen to good people. All I know is that this life is somehow meant to be a growth experience for us - we are meant to have both successes and failures in life. We're meant to have both joy and despair, happiness and sadness, good relationships and challenging relationships. And somehow, through it all, we're meant to learn certain lessons - lessons that will help develop our character and make us more like Christ. And in both the good times and the tough times, God is always there at our side, guiding us, comforting us, assuring us, and giving us peace. And I thank God for His great promises!

ST. JOHN'S KIDS NEWS

This week in Kids Church......

God is Mysterious ....so we have faith...
Sometimes, we can't figure out God!  God is mysterious because he's bigger than we can understand.  Sometimes we're not sure why he does things.  But we can have faith and believe in him even when we don't understand.
One way God helps us start to understand him is through the Bible.

"When I Found You"
by: Catherine Ryan Hyde

What do I have to do to make you wash your hands of me?  There's nothing you could do.  I will never wash my hands of you.  From the author of Pay It Forward comes a poignant tale of love, pain and trusting people to stay by your side in a world where leaving is easy.

We will meet on Tuesday, June 4, at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the Church  Parlor.
Leaders are Barbara Schneider and Carol Campbell.
All are welcome.

SHEETS FOR RED BIRD
Naomi Circle is collecting sheets for Red Bird Mission during the month of June. They will be included in the Christmas Boxes that each family receives.  Because of your generosity, last year each child received their own set of sheets.  Many received their own set for the first time.  All sizes are requested, juvenile twins would be great.  Containers may be found throughout the church for your donations.  Any questions please contact Linda Barr, 215-773-9865 or Carol Campbell, 215-364-0942.
Thank you.
HEARTS FOR MISSIONS

  • Habitat for Humanity - working on construction/finishing of four homes in the Morrisville Area.
  • Third annual R.I.S.E. Sunday, October 6, 2019.
