PASTOR'S REFLECTION
What are the little tasks that you really, really hate to do? We all have certain things we dread doing for whatever reason, and we tend to put them off and find almost anything else to do rather than THAT.

I happen to be thinking about this subject because at the moment, I'm sitting in the waiting area of the car dealership having service done on my car. Definitely not one of my favorite ways to spend my time and I probably should have done this a few months ago. Some of the other little tasks I often put off are emptying the dishwasher, pumping gas, vacuuming, keeping my two very furry shelties appropriately brushed, and putting away all the odds and ends I tend to leave laying around on the kitchen counter. Some of these things, like pumping gas, I eventually get forced into, but others can be put off for an extended period of time even though I tell myself every morning that today is the day. Of course, I don't usually think of myself as a procrastinator, but obviously I am.

The good news is that none of these annoying little jobs are life-and-death issues. And none of them have any eternal impact. And yet, I'm always at least mildly annoyed at myself for procrastinating. I'm sure you, too, suffer from this same kind of guilt!

But what are those life-and-death issues that we OUGHT to be on top of and that we OUGHT to be concerned about - those things that really DO have eternal significance? Very simply put, it's our relationships - our relationship with God and our relationships with others.

So let's all feel free to let the vacuuming go in favor of caring for our relationship with the Lord as well as the people with whom we share the journey. Sounds like a plan to me!

United Meth odist Neighborhood Services (UMNS) serves the needs of the poor and the marginalized inner city Philadelphia people, especially women, children and the youth. The Mission is to meet immediate personal needs to produce a positive impact on the whole community. This is accomplished by involving community members in making decisions and by empowering individuals to become self-sufficient. UMNS provides direct services, counseling and cooperates with other Human Service Agencies.   The UMNS is located in Janes Memorial UMC's Thelma Nichols building in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Much of its income comes from the United Methodist Women and the United Methodist Churches of the Eastern PA Annual Conference.
