LENT, BURNING BUSHES, AND BEGINNING AGAIN

by Dennis W. Foust, Senior Minister

How are you using these extra hours of daylight? One opportunity, during this season of Lent, is to pursue spiritual renewal by being attentive to what you give your attentiveness.

In our busy lives, we turn aside to give our attentiveness to a plethora of interests and interruptions. Learning to give attention to what really matters is a discipline.

Through the years, I have enjoyed hearing people describe their burning bush moments. These are moments when God’s grace has shimmered alerting you to the possibility that God is at work doing something that you could not have imagined. In words reflecting this eternal Truth, I remind you of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem:

Earth's crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God;

but only he who sees takes off his shoes –

the rest just sit around it and pluck blackberries.

In the biblical story of Moses and the burning bush, he experienced a moment that spurred him forward into new commitments. It was a beginning again moment for Moses. Yet, he had to turn aside to be attentive to God’s message for him in the bush.

Lent affords us with a challenge to begin again. Lent gifts us with additional light so we can turn aside and invest our attentiveness in what really matters. Do you know the poetic thoughts of Louise Fletcher Tabkington?

THE LAND OF BEGINNING AGAIN

I wish there were some wonderful place called the land of beginning again

where all our mistakes and all our heartaches and all our selfish grief

could be dropped like a shabby old coat by the door

and never be put on again.

I wish we could come on it all unaware like the hiker who finds a lost trail,

and I wish that the one to whom our blindness has done the greatest injustice of all

could be at the gates like an old friend that waits

for the comrade he's gladdest to hail.

It wouldn't be possible not to be kind in the Land of Beginning Again

and the ones we misjudged

and the ones whom we grudged their moments of victory then

would find in the grasp of our loving handclasp

more than penitent lips could explain

for what had been hardest we'd know had been best

and what had seemed loss would be gain

for there isn't a sting that will not take a wing

when we’ve faced it and laughed it away

and I think that the laughter is most what we're after

in the Land of Beginning Again.

So I wish that there were some wonderful place called the Land of Beginning Again

where all our mistakes and all our heartaches and all our selfish grief

could be dropped like a shabby old coat at the door

and never be put on again.

Welcome to Lent, beloved, a Land of Beginning Again.

Let us give our attentiveness to shimmering bushes.

Meet and Mingle this Sunday, March 23 in the Library Commons

After worship this Sunday, March 23, the Membership Resource Team invites new members and guests to a Meet and Mingle in the Library Commons.

This is an opportunity to meet the Membership Resource Team and Ministers and have any questions answered while getting to know one another.

The Library Commons is located across from the conference room on the second floor. Coffee will be available and children are welcome.

Questions for Lent: March 23 Worship

On Sunday, the congregation will be invited to respond in writing to the following prepared questions.

What are some key values and expectations that bind the church family together?

What hopes and dreams do we have for our chosen church family?

How do you foster open and honest communication among the church family?

How do you ensure inclusiveness and respect for diverse perspectives within the church family?

Happy Birthday!

Cooper Cromer will celebrate a birthday on March 26. He is the son of Sarah and Chip.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PERSONNEL RESOURCE TEAM

After a thorough examination of the Church’s staffing, and in response to current and future budgetary concerns as recently identified by Church leadership, the Personnel Resource Team (PeRT) has made the difficult decision to eliminate the full-time position titled “Minister for Worship and Music” for the foreseeable future. Accordingly, Russell Nelson’s last day of employment with the Church will be Monday, April 7. On behalf of St. John’s Baptist Church, PeRT is so grateful for Russell’s service and ministry.

PeRT understands the importance of music ministry to all St. John’s members, staff, visitors, and the surrounding community and is committed to maintaining such ministry. Thus, in the coming weeks, PeRT will be working on an alternative to the full-time music minster position that simultaneously meets the Church’s current and future budgetary realities as well as its mission to continue such ministry. In the meantime, with assistance from the Church’s staff, an interim plan is in place. PeRT is thankful for all of our congregants and staff who continue to contribute to the Church’s music ministry.

Hopes and Dreams – Then and Now

On Sunday, March 23, 2025, three days before we begin our 104th year, we will celebrate Heritage and Hope Sunday. Throughout the years, the people of St. John’s have had hopes and dreams to live the words of the Church Covenant, recognizing that the principles of the Covenant reflect the purposes for which the church was established. These include caring for and looking after one another, meeting together for worship, but primarily “trying to do that which pleases” God in our lives and relationships.

Real Estate Task Force Update

As part of our Converge 2024 initiative, we identified four key areas for focus, one of which is Financial Stewardship. This includes a careful examination of our building, a vital asset for our ministries. We want to provide you with an update on the progress of our Real Estate Task Force (RETF) in addressing both the positive and challenging aspects of our facilities.
