WORKING TOGETHER
TO SUPPORT THE KINGDOM OF GOD
"Then Jesus approached and said to them, 'All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.'” Matthew 28: 18-20

YOUTH, YOUNG ADULT, & FAMILY MINISTRY UPDATES | |
Young Adult
Candlelight Mass
Oct 16
Save the date later this month during parish confessions for Candlelight Mass. We host a beautiful and reverent candlelit liturgy in Latin geared toward young adults. The Mass is similar to your typical Sunday Mass at St Michael's Abbey.
We will have booklets for the ordinary form of the Mass in Latin and English at this Mass. This helps us (who do not know Latin) to follow along and participate. These booklets will be available in the center isle before and during Mass. If you bring someone new, be sure to borrow one.
Mass will begin at 7:00pm in the main church. It will be during our weekly parish confession time so reconciliation will be available during and after the Mass.
After Mass, we encourage everyone to head over to a local eatery for fellowship. We will be meeting at In-n-Out off of Harbor boulevard in Costa Mesa.
In-n-Out: 3211 Harbor Blvd, Costa Mesa, CA 92626
"I urge you with all the strength of my soul to approach the Eucharistic Table as often as possible. Feed on this Bread of the Angels from which you will draw the strength to fight inner struggles." - Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati

Two wonderful SJB School Traditions . . . |
The evening of September 20th, the SJB church courtyard was transformed into an Italian tratorria!
750+ people from the school community gathered for the 35th annual spaghetti dinner that highlights the opening of the school year.
Special guest this year was Fr. Augustine Puchner, beloved SJB pastor emeritus!
Fr. Godfrey Bushmaker, our parochial vicar emeritus also made a "virtual" appearance.
The air was abuzz with lively conversations as members of the 7th and 8th grade classes served up a delicious dinner, generously sponsored by Pizza D’Oro restaurant. In addition to the great food, there were games, face painting, a photo booth, and opportunity drawings!

THANK YOU PIZZA D'ORO!
FOR ONCE AGAIN SPONSORING OUR
FANTASTIC SPAGHETTI DINNER!
| The morning of Tuesday, September 24th saw St. John the Baptist parish church filled to capacity with students, faculty, and Norbertine sisters as Fr. Damien Giap, our school rector, celebrated the annual Mercy Day Mass, commemorating the Mercy Sisters who served the school and parish community from the school’s inception in 1959 until the retirement of Sister Mary Vianney, the last Mercy Sister to serve at the school. | |
Readings and presentations about the sisters from the 8th graders celebrated the opening of the first House of Mercy convent by Venerable Catherine McAuley in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland.
Students also provided beautiful music for the Mass. The school’s 7th and 8th grade Red Team served the Mass, and two Red Team members engineered the livestream of the school Mass.

October is the month of the Most Holy Rosary
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
| |
According to an account by fifteenth-century Dominican Blessed Alan de la Roche, Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others.
When we consider the power of the Rosary as seen in its effects, we find an abundance of proofs of its wonderful value. Many are the favors granted to individuals through its devout recitation: there are few devoted users of the Rosary who cannot testify to experiencing its power in their own lives.
If we turn to history, we see many great triumphs of the Rosary. In 1571 Pope Pius V knew he needed more than just military strength to defend Christian Europe, so he asked that all the faithful pray the rosary, requesting the intercession of the Blessed Mother. At the Battle of Lepanto, the Holy League was victorious and the maritime expansion of the Ottoman Empire was prevented. The Pope attributed the great victory to the fact that at the same time as the battle was ongoing the Rosary confraternities at Rome and elsewhere were holding their processions. Accordingly, he ordered a commemoration of the Rosary to be made on that day, originally called Our Lady of Victory. Two years later, Pope Gregory XIII allowed the celebration of a feast of the Rosary in churches having an altar dedicated to the Rosary.
In 1571 the rosary was still a relatively new prayer form for the universal church. Pope Pius V had issued a decree formally establishing devotion to the rosary in the papal bull Consueverunt Romani Pontifices just two years before the Battle of Lepanto. The Holy Father’s universal promulgation recognized the growing devotion to the Blessed Mother throughout Europe, as well as the increased prayer of the rosary in various locations.
Devotion to the rosary was especially promoted by St. Peter Canisius (who, according to tradition, added the final verse to the Hail Mary, in which we pray, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death” — printed officially in the Catechism of the Council of Trent in 1566). The first two verses of the Hail Mary are adapted from Luke 1:28 and 1:42.
A second great victory over the Turks, who once again threatened Christian civilization, occurred on August 5, 1716, when Prince Eugene defeated them at Peterwardein in Hungary. Thereupon Clement XI extended the feast of the Rosary to the whole Church.
After a few centuries, the name was changed to Our Lady of the Rosary to more clearly recognize that prayer was the greatest power at work.
The rosary is an invitation to experience the grace of Mary’s spiritual motherhood as she leads us to her Son, Jesus. For this reason, it has been an invaluable source of countless spiritual graces for the saints. Remember, every time we pray the rosary we are given the privilege and honor of pronouncing the holy name of Jesus more than 50 times.
The rosary is also a living prayer form and continues to develop even in recent times. An invocation known as the Fatima Prayer was commonly added in the early 20th century. In 2002 Pope John Paul II added a new set of five reflections, the Luminous Mysteries, which encourage additional meditations on the life of Jesus.
October is a good month to turn off the radio or podcast as we commute to work or school and pray the rosary instead. See what graces the Lord wants to pour into our life from the rose garden of this daily meditation.
- Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche . . . When you say your Rosary, the angels rejoice, the Blessed Trinity delights in it, my Son finds joy in it too, and I myself am happier than you can possibly guess. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there is nothing in the Church that I love as much as the Rosary.
