A Joyful Week at Vacation Bible School
Dear St. Luke’s family,
I’m so excited to share a glimpse into this summer’s week of Vacation Bible School. Our theme, Waves of Gratitude, was inspired by curriculum from the United Thank Offering. Our church was brimming with joy, curiosity, and the unmistakable energy of God’s love as 39 campers explored the connection between gratitude and water. Through Bible stories, children’s literature, art, science, music, games, and daily gratitude practices, we discovered how thankfulness can become a natural, life-giving rhythm.
Our campers came from near and far, St. Luke’s, other local congregations, and even families with no church home. We even had a group of cousins from Oregon and California! Over five days, they experienced arts and crafts, STEAM experiments, ocean-themed snacks, lively movement games, and moments of quiet reflection. They laughed, sang, prayed, and learned in ways that will echo for weeks to come.
To you, our congregation, thank you. Your generosity made this possible. You fulfilled our Amazon wishlist, donated items from your homes, and prepared nourishing snacks, fruit, and vegetables each day. Every act of service and every gift, whether visible or behind the scenes, became part of the joy that radiated through this place.
This ministry was only possible because of the dedication of our volunteers, those who led stations, guided groups, served food, cleaned up, prayed, and greeted families at the door. We were blessed to witness God’s love in action through their time, energy, and care.
The impact reached beyond the week itself. The Sunday following VBS, we welcomed several new families to worship, and many stayed for brunch. Three campers have already joined the children’s choir! Parents shared words of deep appreciation: children came home singing worship songs, sharing Bible stories, and declaring it “the best camp ever.”
This week was church at its very best, joyful, welcoming, Christ-centered, and rooted in gratitude. My prayer is that the waves of gratitude that rolled through these halls continue to ripple outward into our lives, our community, and the world.
With a grateful heart,
Amy Weigand

Welcome Back to the Boyds!
We enjoyed the Boyds on August 17 and are thrilled to worship with them again this Sunday. The Rev. David will be our celebrant and Rev. Cathy will preach. If you missed them then, read a bit about them below...
| | | | |
The Rev. David Boyd is originally from Janesville, Wisconsin. He attended college on an athletic scholarship as a competitive swimmer, where he graduated in Physical Education. After college, he coached swimming in St. Louis, Missouri, where he joined the Episcopal Church and recognized a call to the priesthood. He attended seminary at Nashotah House, graduated, and was ordained in 1984. After seminary, he served parishes and camps in Wisconsin, Missouri, Kentucky, and Texas. He also served on the staff of the national Episcopal Church. David retired from St. David's, Austin in 2015. He is married to the Rev. Cathy Boyd. They have two adult children and a one-year-old granddaughter. David and Cathy moved to Easton, MA in 2022 and often serve together, assisting in parishes in New Bedford, MA and Providence.
The Rev. Cathy Boyd is a Missouri native and third-generation Mizzou graduate. She and her Husband, the Rev. David Boyd, have served churches in Wisconsin, Lexington, Kentucky, Austin, Texas, and most recently in Williamsburg, Virginia, where Cathy was rector of St. Martin's Episcopal Church. Both of their adult children (and grandbaby Eleanor!) live in Providence. Recently retired, Cathy and David now reside in Easton, Massachusetts, assisting parishes in New Bedford, Providence...and, now, East Greenwich!

Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches… You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.
John 15:4-5, 16-17
| | Throughout the month of August, we continue to invite your expressions of gratitude for the many examples of God’s good work at St Luke’s! | | | |
Each of us has a unique view of the good things that are happening at St. Luke's. Please share yours on our St. Luke’s Grapevine of Gratitude! Take a paper leaf or grapes and write something that members of St. Luke’s are doing or have done that expresses the good news of Christ to you, then hang it on the vine for others to celebrate too!
Gratitude is abundant for the many blessings -- both great and small -- shared within our St. Luke's community. Enjoy some new Highlights from the Vine...

Theology on Tap -- Cooking for Echo Village
Tuesday, August 25th
On August 25th at 3:00pm, TOT is planning to prepare a meal in St. Luke's Community Kitchen and then take it up to Echo Village to serve the residents. Our goal is to offer them a home-cooked meal coupled with some TOT style fellowship time. ECHO Village (Emergency COVID Housing Opportunities) is a pioneering initiative by House of Hope CDC, offering a safe, private, and supportive environment for individuals experiencing homelessness. According to their mission statement, ECHO Village is: ... rooted in the belief that housing is a human right. We are committed to treating every resident with dignity, trust, and respect, providing access to resources and opportunities that empower them to rebuild their lives and transition to permanent supportive housing.
We hope this is the first step in building a bridge between St. Luke's and this homeless community. So, bring your apron and join us in the kitchen on the 25th!

DORCAS
Dorcas International Institute of RI is a refugee resettlement agency whose mission is to help newcomers to RI. Last year, over 334 individuals from 21 different countries were resettled!
When they arrive, they are met at TF Green by a Dorcas case worker. They are provided with options for legal, education, employment services and other tools to help them begin the process of becoming independent.
St. Luke's partners with Dorcas in a variety of ways. Currently, we are helping with a need for adult underwear and socks.
Please help us by dropping off donations of new adult underwear and white socks in the Dorcas bin in the atrium. If you’d like to learn more about the Dorcas/St. Luke's partnership, please email me, I’d love to hear from you.
