St. Luke's Weekly Epistle
Week of September 8
Hurricane Dorian has left a path of destruction in the Bahamas.  We need your help to provide relief and support to communities impacted by this devastating storm.  We are working through the Anglican Alliance to support the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas & the Turks and Caicos as they begin assessing the damage and providing aid to those impacted.  In addition, our church partners on the U. S. Southeast coast need your help as they too respond to the needs of their communities. Click here to make a donation to the Hurricane Reflief Fund of ERD

Attending to our spiritual well-being is a bit like attending to our physical health. Regular spiritual practices such as daily prayer and scripture study are like physical exercise.  The more we do them, the easier they get and the healthier we become.  Forward Movement has launched RenewalWorks for Me.  This new resources-free of charge-begins with a brief self-assessment of where you are in your spiritual growth.  Based on the results of that quiz, you can sign up for an eight week series of emails to offer you specific encouragement on a path that will foster spiritual growth.

Dear People of St Luke's,
I'm saddened to announce you that on Wednesday, August 28, Beth Shaw resigned from her position of Senior Warden. Beth began as our Senior Warden in September 2018. I'm so thankful for what Beth accomplished in her ministry, the talents that she shared with us, her leadership and her unconditional support. She will be missed. May the Lord bless Beth, guide her, and be with her always.
In Christ's love
Storm of Grace
What if, in the time it takes rain to fall from heaven to the ground, you changed? You turned your head and knew the presence of the Holy Spirit?
Imagine, in the thunder, you suddenly believed that Jesus died for you, not for you as a part of the big glob of all humanity, but you with your name, history, mistakes and sins?
Suppose, in a split of lightening, you forgave the person who hurt you most in this world, or you forgave yourself?
Perhaps you found yourself in a flash-flood of letting go---of your anger, self-pity or pride?  And everything that you grasp for stability was washed away---people, things, activities and the addiction that you use to prop yourself up?
What if all you held on to was JESUS?  It could happen, just like that.
Lord, I am willing.  Amen

Here is a challenge put to God 's community:
Are we open to God's surprises?
Do we have the courage to strike out along the paths that God's newness sets before us?
Are we open to the surprises of the Holy Spirit?
A new ministry of Healing Prayer is coming to St. Luke's.  Some of you remember a time when we could go into the chapel following communion and request healing prayer.   Soon we will be offering this again.  And there is much more. We are also offering workshops about Healing Prayer and Bible studies about the Healings of Jesus.   All of this is in preparation for becoming a Healing Community called "The Order of St. Luke the Physician." This is an International Order which has brought hope and healing to thousands of people throughout the world.   A series of workshops will be held in the Conference room at St. Luke's from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the following Saturdays: September 7th, 14th; October 5th and 12th, and Nov. 2nd and 9th.   The sessions will be led by the Rev. Susan Schubert. You may call her if you have any questions at 928-308-5942.  A registration sheet will be in the Gathering Hall. Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch.
*** WARM FOR WINTER *** clothing collection has begun!  Collection bin is in the Gathering Room and will be available for the month of September only . Reminder: Children's clothing must be new and adult clothing clean and gently used.  Thanks to all for supporting this community-wide effort!

Journey Jottings:
Notes from St. Luke's Deacon in Formation
Although deacon formation classes were not held in June, July, or August, the Class of 2020-Amy Bryan (St. Augustine's,Tempe), Susan Erickson (St. Philip's In The Hills, Tucson), and I-were not sitting idle!  We had lots of reading to do, papers to write, events and activities to attend, and succession plans to develop for the ministries in our home parishes that we will be leaving behind when our internships begin on September 1st.  But before talking about our internships, I'll recap our summer.

Help Us Help Those in Need
Your Pastoral Care Team is in need of people to support our Pastoral Care efforts.  We need people who can prepare meals for those recovering from illness and/or surgery, and people who would provide rides for some of our homebound to get to church.  We are also in need of additional Lay Eucharistic Visitors who can bring both communion and the blessings of our community to those who are unable to attend church. Whenever we renew our baptismal covenant, we say that we "will seek and serve Christ in all persons"....what better way to live our baptismal promises than to be of service to those who are in need?  If you are interested in fulfilling any of these needs, please contact Lucy Kemper at or 928 642-8831, or Deacon Chris Christy at .
Altar Servers' Training
If you are interested in serving at the altar, please join us for training on Tuesday, September 10 at 11:00 AM or on Saturday, September 14 at 11:00 AM.  If you have questions, please contact Lucy Kemper at or 928 642-8831.
If you are currently  on the schedule please attend one of these two trainings to "refresh" your training.

The name "Stand Down" comes from times of war when exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battlefield to a place of relative security and safety.  Today, Stand Down refers to a grass-roots, community-based intervention program designed to help the 130,000 homeless veterans "combat" life on the streets. The hand-up, not handout philosophy of Stand Down is carried out through the work of hundreds of volunteers across the nation.  St. Luke's Undie Sunday Drive collected new socks, underwear and undershirts, and longjohns for this event, which culminates on Sept. 13 & 14, at U.S. Vets, 917 E. Gurley . To volunteer pick up a Volunteer Questionnaire from the Outreach table or contact Skye Biasetti at 928-583-7679 []
