St. Luke's Weekly Epistle
Week of December 1
O God who is always coming into our worlds and into our lives, Give us keener self-understanding - as keen as we can bear at one sitting - lest we think of ourselves more highly, or more lowly, than we ought. Give us a sense of what is vital in life, lest we squander our years and waste our attention on inflated trifles. Give us a due regard for our unity with all people, lest we think in tribal patterns and forget that you are Lover of all the earth. We ask of you the most meaningful Advent season we have ever known:
Ernest T. Campbell - Riverside Church, New York City
AdventWord Begins December 2
#AdventWord will offer meditations and images to inspire and connect individuals in a worldwide community of believers. 24 writers shared their thoughts on a chosen word, and the meditations will be available daily in 8 different languages and an ASL video as well.   Bishop Curry wrote the Christmas meditation for this year's AdventWord - we hope you will join us on this journey as we prepare for the birth of Christ. Sign-up using the link below to receive daily emails from AdventWord, and make sure to participate as well!
Turkeys and Hams
The Food Pantry was a busy place the Friday before Thanksgiving.  20 large boxes were filled with a turkey or a ham and all the fixins for a Thanksgiving dinner, including a roasting pan.  By noon 30 boxes had been distributed--St. Luke's version of Loaves and Fishes.  Now the pantry is literally bare.  Some items to replenish:  Costco-Kraft mac n cheese bundles, canned chicken bundles, tuna packed in water; apple juice, oatmeal, low sugar breakfast cereals, bagged onions, peanut butter, dried beans.  All donations are most welcome.
Writing the annual report for JustCoffee left me with a grateful heart.  St Lukes sent $6900 to the Cafe' Justo Cooperativa in 11 months.  On behalf of these coffee grower families, THANK YOU for your enthusiastic and on-going support.  A big Thank You for the Coffee-selling volunteers who make the program a reality:  Doug and Pat Ogburn, Karen Benson and David White, Eileen Griffin, and Mary Lou Worley.  Thank you, Lauree, for receiving the shipments, and following up with unclaimed special orders.   Special Thanks to our Rector Pierre-Henry for whole-heartedly promoting the program each month.  Gratefully, Mary Ellen Rivero
Update from Beth Parknowitz,
our Parish Administrator
Saturday, I participated in the Undy Run Walk in Phoenix, along with family and friends. This event was organized by the Colorectal Cancer Alliance to create awareness and raise funds for the prevention of colorectal cancer. I walked with our daughters, Emma and Kasey, while Chuck, my husband, ran the 5-K. It was an amazing, fun, and inspiring day!  I loved every minute of it - sore feet and all. I even got to meet several other survivors! I definitely plan on doing the event next year.   I am undergoing treatment for stage 1 rectal cancer and have just completed my third round of chemotherapy with one to go. It will begin the day before Thanksgiving. For more detailed information on my journey, go to: I am thankful to Fr. Pierre-Henry for his support and prayers as well as that of the Vestry and. I am full of gratitude for your prayers and loving wishes. I am also so grateful to all the volunteers who keep the office running so smoothly. I look forward to the day I get to come back with this journey behind me.  Wishing each of you a warm and happy Thanksgiving!

Christmas at Perryville
December 14, 10:30 am in the conference room
Again this year we will be addressing Christmas cards to send to the women imprisoned at Perryville.   It's hard to communicate just how devastating it is for these women and mothers not to be with their loved ones for the holidays. Some have even been cut off from their families and are especially lonely at this time of year. Cards mean the world to them and shed light into the darkness of isolation.  If you can't come December 14, contact me ( and I will make arrangements to get cards, stamped envelopes, and a list to you.

Journey Jottings:
Notes from St. Luke's Deacon in Formation
The dates of this year's Diocesan Convention impacted the Deacon Formation Academy's calendar, so there were only three weeks between DFA classes in October and November.  To someone unaware of the rigors of deacon formation, three weeks may sound like "no big deal," but, in reality, it truly put a "squeeze" on the Class of 2020 as we juggled internship responsibilities in our host parishes; wrote papers and sermons; maintained our prayer life and spiritual practices; read books; and did our best to keep our lives in balance!  Somehow we got through it, thanks to God's grace! click here to read complete article
The Order of St. Luke Healing Community's December meeting will be a Potluck at the home of the Rev.s Jim  and Susan Schubert. It is scheduled for Monday, December 2nd at 5:30 p.m.. Participants are encouraged to bring their significant other and a salad, side dish or dessert to share. Please phone Susan at 928-308-5942 with any questions and to  let her know if you or you and a guest plan to attend.
Be an Angel - Sponsor a Child for Christmas!
Thank you to everyone who adopted an Angel last weekend! We had 62 kiddos adopted, and I have been working on finding homes for the last 8.
Did you adopt a kiddo without receiving a bag? We had four tags "walk away" from the tree. If you took home ROBERT, GAGE, LAYLIANNA, or L.N. please let me know! Lauren Crawford: (734) 771-2397 or
